Mrs. Joe Downey died at her farm home near Monona early Wednesday morning, following pneumonia. She had been ill since Christmas day. The body is at the Oelke funeral home, Elkader, pending funeral arrangements which will be completed upon word from her daughter Mildred, who is in Long Beach, Calif.
Mrs. Downey was the former Hilda Peick of Elkader, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Peick.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 1:30 p.m. Thursday, when the body will be returned to Monona.
Three other members of the Downey family have been seriously ill with pneumonia, but are recovering. Those afflicted are Keith, four years old, Catherine, a student in the Monona high school, and Mrs. Charles Downey, a daughter-in-law.

Funeral services for Mrs. Joseph L. Downey were held at St. Joseph's church here Saturday, Jan. 15, with Rt. Rev. Msgr. James P. Taken officiating at the requiem mass. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery. Mrs. Downey died Jan. 12 at her home after a three weeks' illness of pneumonia.
Mrs. Downey, the former Hildegart W. A. Pieck was born Dec. 17, 1893, at Littleport, the daughter of Charles and Anna Peick. Her father died in 1938 and her mother in 1940. She was married Jan. 14, 1920 at St. Joseph's church, Elkader, to Joseph L. Downey. She has always lived in the vicinity of Elkader with the exception of two years which were spent in Alma, Kan. The family moved to a farm in Giard township two miles east of Monona in 1942 and this was her home at the time of her death.
Besides her husband, she is survived by six children: Mildred, of Long Beach, Calif., and Charles, Mary, Catherine, Robert and Keith, all at home, and one grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Miller of Garber, and Mrs. John Farrell of Long Beach, Calif.
Mrs. Downey was a member of St. Patrick's church of Monona.
Pallbearers were Ben Meyer, Alex Berns, Simon Moses, William Moses, Carl Dahling and John Whiley.
