Mr. Eber Harlan received news Sunday stating that his brother, Cyrus Harlan, aged sixty-six and his son, Eber Harlan’s nephew, had both died last Friday within twenty-four hours at the former’s home near Hillsborough, Iowa.

Pneumonia was the cause of their death. One funeral service was held for them and both were buried in the same grave. The son was forty-seven years of age.

Mr. Harlan was not able to attend owning to the dispatch of notification being sent to Indiana by mistake. The deceased gentlemen were highly respected citizens.

Last week’s Democrat mentioned the death of a brother and nephew of Eber Harlan at their home in Harrisburg township, Van Buren County. The Keosauqua Democrat’s Harrisburg township correspondent writes: “There are quite a number of cases of the grip, of which two have proved fatal, in the death of Cyrus Harlan, which occurred at his residence Friday morning, February 3, and also his eldest son, Norman, who followed his father 21 hours later.”

In the deaths of these two noble and generous Christian men, this community has suffered a loss which it will feel for a long time. It came with such crushing force that we can hardly realize it to be true.

Only two weeks ago, at Endeavor, Norman took for his text the scripture found in Gal. 6-9: ‘And let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not,’ which father and son literally fulfilled every day they lived, never neglecting an opportunity to do a kind and generous act; and to those who are left behind, we have the happy assurance that when the grim reaper comes and summons us across the dark river we shall find two more in that vast throng to welcome us home.
