A pitiable case of an old man’s death and burial happened in Osceola last week. Readers of The Sentinel of last week will remember the item about Mr. N.C. Moore’s dropping dead while driving a team. The fact was the old gentleman was whipping his horses and his fit of anger induced the stoppage of heart action.

The old man had few friends and less relatives, it is to be presumed. He belonged to no secret society and his remains were shuffled into a pine box and hauled to the cemetery, with no funeral services whatever.

It may have been the fault of the old man’s manner of living, but such burials are a slur upon civilization, and cannot be called Christian. It is little less than the burying of a beast whose spirit is not supposed to account for the deeds done in the body.

The old gentleman’s figures was familiar to the people about Osceola. His round face, snow white hair and beard in profusion, gave him a resemblance to the later pictures of Victor Hugo. He was quiet, unobtrusive, an was often seen an attendant at church services. His earthly career came to a sudden, most inglorious ending.

In a case like this the funeral rites performed by secret societies are a blessing. Had the old gentleman belonged to either of the many societies he would have had a decent burial.

Misinformation let the Sentinel to make a wrong statement last week regarding the burial of Mr. N. C. Moore. He was a member of the M.E. church and services were performed by Rev. Shenton in the presence of a number of friends.

The article was an injustice to Rev. Shenton, the church and the friends who kindly interested themselves in the services and so far as this retraction can correct the error, The Sentinel does it gladly.
