April 19, 1979 - The Tipton Conservative

Funeral services for Mrs. Merle (W. Elizabeth Betz) Highly, 69, were held at the Sheets and Son funeral home April 16 with the Rev. John Cuddeback officiating. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery. Pallbearers were Bryce and Eldon Werling, Paul Sailor, Kenneth Oldham, Cliff Krutsinger and George Stuckey. Mrs. Leah Rae Highly was organist.

Mrs. Highly died at the Americana Nursing home, Cedar Rapids April 12, following a long illness. She had been at the nursing home 3 months.

The daughter of Ocie and Gertrude Hazelton Clover, she was born at Tipton Oct. 26, 1909 and graduated from Tipton high school in 1928.

She taught in the rural Cedar county schools prior to her marriage to Merle M. Highly at Preston, Ill. Feb. 18, 1931.

A lifetime resident of Tipton, she was a member of the Red Oak King's Daughters circle.

Mrs. Highly is survived by her husband; 2 sons, Jim, Cedar Rapids and Steve, Iowa City; 5 grandchildren and 3 sisters, Mrs. Richard (Gertrude) Kemp, Tipton, Mrs. Lee (Margaret Sailor) Romer, Oxford Junction, and Mrs. Rennie (Ruth) Fiala, Tucson, Ariz. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers.
