____Mrs. H. H. Hawks Breathes Her Last, Last Night
____Mrs. H. H. Hawks, one of the early pioneers of Atlantic and a lady known widely in this city and Cass county, died last night at 12:15 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. M. Stafford, on Poplar street.
Several months ago Mrs. Hawks received a fall on a defective sidewalk, as a result of which her hip was broken. From this accident she never fully recovered and it is to this rather than old age that her death is to be attributed. Before her fall Mrs. Hawks was a very active woman for her age. Her death, though not unexpected, comes as a shock to the many Atlantic friends who have known and esteemed her.
Mrs. Hawks came to Atlantic with her husband who died nineteen years ago from Waukeegan, Ill., in 1869. She was born at Hartford, N.Y., and was married there. Her maiden name was Sarah Pelton. The couple moved to Illinois from the east in 1840. Mrs. Hawks was a lifelong member of the Congregational church, and was a consistent and earnest Christian woman. She was of a happy and kindly disposition and her good works were many and will be long remembered.
Mrs. Hawks was the mother of two children, but her daughter, Mrs. Stafford, is the only one who survives her.
The funeral will take place at the Congregational church at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon. At that time the casket will not be opened. Those who desire to view the remains are invited to come to the house tomorrow after 11 o'clock.
