HERBERT—Died, at the home of his son, J. K., in Brighton township, May 23 at 4 p. m., J. R. Herbert, aged 80 years, 6 months and 9 days. Funeral at 10 o'clock a. m. Saturday, May 25 at his late residence.
J. R. Herbert came to Cass county and to Brighton-township in 1867, having traded Hardin county, Ohio, land for 800 acres near Marne. He divided this vast tract among his sons and, has been gratified to see them become men of influence in their communities, always honoring their father.
Mr. Herbert was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, in 1814, being of Welch and Irish decent. In 1836 he married Miss Hanna Barton, a faithful and loving wife who now, at the age of 80, mourns his death. Five sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Herbert, four of whom are living and three of them were with their father at the end. He suffered from a parylitic stroke which overcame him the 29th of last December and from the effects of which he has never recovered. Mr. Herbert was a member of the M.E.' church and has led a good life, full of good things which worked, and will in the future work for good in the world.
A Card to our Friends
The members of the family of the late Father Herbert, and especially his bereaved companion and the family of his son, Joseph K., at whose home he lived the last few years of his life, and at whose home he died, beg leave to say a few words to you through the columns of this paper. You deserve more than a passing notice. You deserve more than an ordinary "Card of Thanks." You deserve more than we are capable of saying or doing. Through the long months of sickness you were tireless in your efforts to make
light out of darkness. You seemed to forget your own interests in trying to soothe his pathway, and alleviate his sufferings, as he approached the shores of the dark river. Then when his tired heart had ceased its restless beating, you came again with tender words of
consolation, sang the songs beloved, and covered the casket with beautiful flowers, true indications of loving hearts, kindly natures and fine sensibilities. We stand before you today unable to express our gratitude. Our hearts are full of love for you, and good wishes for your present and future welfare, and as "the low gate turns back upon its silent … again and again, and you pass through to find rest," may yours be the reward of the
finally faithful, a reward that earthly friends cannot give.Atlantic Daily Telegraph
