Her maiden name was Laura Ann Raymond and her girlhood days were spent in the New England states. Her father died when she was five years old. When she was twenty-one years old she went to Saratoga, N. Y., and while there she was united in marriage to James Franklin. By this union eleven children were born, of whom seven survive her: Sterling L. Franklin, Mrs. Sarah M. Douglass, Mrs. Mary E. Huffman, William C. Franklin, Layfayette J. Franklin, Mrs. Robie JB. Parsons, and Mrs. Aldia A. Smith. She has thirty-one grand children and three great grand children surviving her. She, with her husband, came to Iowa in the pioneer days, having -come here before the first Iowa legislature was held. Here she has lived since, with the exception of seven years which were spent in Dakota. Her husband died at the early age of forty four years. She was a devout member of the Methodist church, having united with that church at Iowa City in'45. She suffered great pain during her final sickness and on being asked how she was feeling, she would say that she was almost on the other shore. Her dying words were: "God bless you all and may you all learn the way to heaven."
She at last was called home
To be with hsr blessed Maste",
To rest beside the great white throne;
To that celestial city above
Where there is no night,
But all is light and love.
