After a prolonged illness of three years, John Calvin Cannon died at his home in Wiota, April 17, 1897 at the age of 76 years, 4 months and 7 days. The funeral occurred Monday, Rev. Stanley, of Atlantic, conducting the sad last rites and the remains were laid to rest in the Bowen cemetery by the side of two loved children, a son and a daughter, who had passed to the land beyond the grave. Mr. Cannon was born December 10, 1820, in Stokes County, N. C., moved to Indiana at the age of six years, and was married August 1, 1844 to Elizabeth Jane Walker. To this union were born eleven children, nine of whom are living, four sons and a daughter having settled in this state, and four sons in the western country. Mr. and Mrs. Cannon remained in Indiana until 1852, when they came to Johnson County, Iowa and in 1855 moved to Cass County and settled on Troublesome creek, where they resided until a few years ago when they moved into this city. The bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of this entire community in their hour of affliction.
