Bessie Madge Burns, was born in Exira, Iowa, April 2, 1888, and died in the Atlantic Hospital, Atlantic, Iowa February 15th 1931, aged 41 years, 10 months and 12 days.
She spent her early life not far from the place of her birth, attending school in Brayton and Oakfield. Her parents attended the Lutheran church and she was baptized in that faith.
On December 14, 1909, she was united in marriage with Virgil E. Nelson of Atlantic, and made her home in the neighborhood of Atlantic. Of this union were born five children. Gerald Russell, died in infancy; Arleigh E. aged 18, Nona Myrl, aged 13; Bessie Lois, aged 5; and Ardelle Loraine, aged 2.
Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Nelson united with the Methodist church of Atlantic, later transferring their membership to the Methodist church of Lewis. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson have lived in the vicinity of Lewis since 1920.
Mrs. Nelson’s death came as a severe shock to her relatives and friends though she had been ill for about four weeks. She is survived by her husband and four children, Arleigh, Nona, Lois and Ardelle. Also by her mother, Mrs. James Burns of Brayton and also by three sisters and four brothers.
Mrs. Nelson was an excellent wife and mother, interested above all in her children, and planning for their future. She was ever ready to help those in trouble and she leaves a host of friends to mourn her death.
Funeral services will be held today, (Wednesday) in the M. E. church in Lewis at 2:00 p., Rev. Paul C Ellis officiating. Interment in the Atlantic cemetery.
