Dear Cathy,
Its a longshot - but I am wondering if you are the same person who submitted a query on the origins of your family in Kilkenny Ireland - the Costellos (1998 I think was when the query was posted ...) If so, I am a Costello and my father and his father before were from Ballymountain, Co. Kilkenny (it is in the far-south of the county)! I am from the next townland of Smartscastle approx. 1 mile away. I can ask my Dad to look into your query - he has assisted in the drafting of a local history book on Kilmacow (the parish in which the townland of Ballymountain is).
Kind regards
Siobhan Harkin (nee Costello)
The original query:
Surnames: BARRETT COSTELLO COSTELLOE
Submitter: cathy rossing (cathyro@juno.com)
Date: 06 Jun 1998
Ggrandfather, Michael Barrett came to US(CA) sometime in 1850s. He married Julia Costello also from Kilkenny. According to their son, Ballymountain (Ballymahon?) was where they were from. Michael's father was John Barrett. Julia's brother, James Costello also came to CA and married Margaret ?. According to anecdotal info. Julia Costello came to Boston and helped fund trip over for Michael and Costellos but have no proof on this. The Costello brother and sister's parents were John and Margaret same last name--Costello. The family always pronounced the name Costelloe. James Costello and his wife Margaret went back to Ireland between 1900 and 1910 census. Their grandson reported family contact was lost during World War II. James and Margaret had no children. Thanks for any help.
