Funeral services for Mayme M. Jacobs, 90, Atlantic, were conducted Oct. 1, 2005 at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn, with Pastor Keith Menter officiating. Interment was in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery. Casket bearers were: David Christensen, Jerald Christensen, Robert Christensen, Frank Wagner, Ben Huenink, Gary Lorenzen, Clay Kristensen, Orlin Johnson, and Scott Benham.

Mayme Marie Jacobs, the daughter of Christen H. and Metta Simonsen Christensen, was born Oct. 13, 1914, on her parents’ farm near Poplar, in Shelby County and died Sept. 27, 2005, at the Friendship Home in Audubon.

Mayme was baptized and confirmed at the Poplar Church in Shelby County. She attended rural schools at Polk Township School No. 7, then graduated from Audubon High School with the Class of 1935. She attended Capital City College in Des Moines, graduating in 1936. Mayme then was employed at Better Homes and Gardens in Des Moines.

On May 15, 1937, she was united in marriage to Arnold Jacobs at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines. They operated several farms in the Marne-Elk Horn area until they purchased their farm south of Elk Horn in January of 1944. They operated a grain and livestock farm. In 1962, they were the “Farm Family of the Week” on WOW-TV. Mayme and Arnold operated the farm until 1994 when they moved into Atlantic. Arnold died Oct. 31, 1996. Mayme lived in Atlantic until she moved to the Friendship Home in Audubon in 2000.

Mayme was a member of the Lutheran Church in Elk Horn since 1944. Mayme was involved in 4-H and started 4-H for girls, “The Clay Cloverettes,” in the late 1950s. She was a member of a neighborhood club, and was an active member of her church circle.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, was her son-in-law, Donald Kristensen; her grandson, Jesse Kristensen; her parents; five brothers and three sisters: Lauritz and wife, Christiana Christensen, Sigurd and wife, Thomina Christensen, Hans and wife, Myrtle Christensen, Simon and wife, Amanda Christensen, Raymond and wife, Winona Christensen, Hansena and husband, Casper Clausen, Hedevig Christensen, Amanda Christensen, Emma Christensen; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Chester and wife, Hertha Johnson, Burton and wife, Lillian Carl; her niece and nephews: Charles Clausen, Arnold Block and Verleen Benton.

Mayme is survived by her daughter, Sandra Kristensen of Audubon; her son, Steven and wife, Joanne Jacobs of Marne; her grandchildren: Toni Kristensen and husband, Rick Defreez of Azalea, OR; and their son, Daniel Defreez of Eugene, OR; Vicki and husband, Rick Shaver, of Jacksonville, FL and their daughters, Amanda Shaver of Atlanta, GA and Megan Shaver of Jacksonville; Clay Kristensen of Bellevue, NE, and his son, Alan Kristensen of Reading, PA; Dean and wife, Glena Kristensen of Santa Clarita, CA and their children, Lauren Kristensen and Ryan Kristensen, both of Santa Clarita; Kari and husband, Ben Huenink of Omaha, NE; Jacque and husband, Scott Benham and their children, Turner, Trevor, Taryn, and Trace, and Julie Butterbaugh, all of Omaha, NE, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
