One additional clue is that in the 1880 census referenced in the LDS site he's still alive and living with his son John Hughs (sp) in Bluff Creek, Monroe County, Iowa. In that entry he indicates that both his mother and father were born in Virginia. I've not found that type of data to be 100% reliable since people's memory fades and they "remember" things that aren't true. But it's very possible this is accurate information.

If you have access to earlier censuses (ancestry.com has them but you typically have to pay to get access), you can look at them to see if that's consistant.
