Since Stiles belonged to the A.M. & F.M. [Ancient Free & Accepted Masons] Lodge in Warren County, Iowa, they announced a resolution after his death in the local newspaper - Weekly Indianola Banner, Indianola, Iowa, Thurs., May 11, 1865, p.3, col.4, The following Resolutions were passed at the special meeting of Warren Lodge, No.53, A. F. & A. M. on the 30th ult.
Whereas, it has pleased an all wise Providence to remove by death from our midst our worthy brother Stiles R. Fox, in this dispensation of Divine Will, we humbly bow in submission firmly believing that God doeth all things well that we may take heed and profit thereby; and that although gone from among us he is not forgotten. And in commemoration of our live and esteem we offer these resolutions to his memory. Resolved, that in the death of Brother Fox the community has lost a good citizen, an affectionate father and the fraternity a worthy member. Resolved, that we tender our heartfelt sympathies to the family of our deceased brother. Respectfully submitted, P. P. Henderson, Jno. D. Ingalls.
[Since President Lincoln had just died on Apr 15, 1865, they also gave a resolution for him]
Whereas, the officers and members of this Lodge have learned of the sudden and untimely death of Abraham Lincoln, late President of the United States, by the hand of an assassin, and whereas, the Ancient charges and the first Great Light of Masonry teaches us to be peaceable citizens, and never to be engaged in plots or conspiracies against the Government under which we live, not to behave himself undutiful to the Magistrates or rulers, but to honor the country and its chief ruler, therefore, resolved that this lodge deems it right and proper to express upon the records of its proceeding it feeling of sadness of the death of the Chief Magistrate of this Nation; and of horror at the revolting crime that terminated his life, a crime as yet, unparalleled in the history of our country. Resolved, that it is the hope of this lodge that the hand of justice will overtake all who have been privy or accessory to the murderous design and made to suffer the severe penalty of the law. Resolved that in respect for the Chief Magistrate of this Nation so suddenly stricken down by the assassin, the lodge be draped in mourning, and that each brother wear the usual badge for 60 days.
