HARLAN. Population 3,00. {sic? 3,000?] The judicial seat of Shelby county, is an incorporated city located on the West Nishnabotna river, and on the C., R. I. & P., the C. G. W. and C. G. W. and C. & N. W. Rys., 14 miles north of Avoca, 35 south of Carroll, 45 northeast of Council Bluffs, and 100 west of Des Moines. It is lighted by electricity, has water works, ice plant, fire department, paved streets, telephone facilities, first class hotels, an opera house, a $65,000 court house, a number of prosperous manufacturing establishments, flour mills, marble works, 3 banks and 3 weekly newspapers, Shelby County Republican, the Tribune and the Vaegteren (Danish-American). There are 9 churches and an admirable public school system. There is a commercial club. Tel., Postal and W. U. Exp., Am. and W., F. & Co. C. F. Swift, postmaster.
