Pioneer Life

In and Around Cedar Rapids, Iowa from 1839 to 1849
Rev. George R. Carroll

Special note from the Linn County Coordinator ...

I love old books and was immediately drawn to this one when I found it in a local antique store.  But I didn't realize until I started reading it, what a fantastic old book it is!  By the end of the first chapter, I knew that it needed to be transcribed in it's entirety and made available to everyone on the Linn County Genealogy site.

George Carroll gives a person-by-person account of many of the very first pioneer settlers in our county. Plus, he gives a vivid description of the land, including joys and hardships they all faced in those days. This is such a rare find! What makes it fun and interesting reading, is that he writes from the perspective of a small child making the journey with his family!

Even if you are not a direct descendant of anyone he specifically identifies in this book, you will want to read it chapter by chapter! Especially if you had ancestors who were living in the area as Linn County was being settled.
