An era
during which Iowa City Telephone Operators had connected so many lives
throughout the world, came to an end in 1981. Their
office closed. On April 30, 1984, Dorothy A Dayton, an
officer with the Iowa City Telephone Pioneers organization, took the
initiative to preserve their history and contributions. She
created and published a booklet dedicated to all Telephone Operators
who had worked in the Iowa City exchange since 1881. Her wonderful work

As I
transcribed A Century of Service, I was inspired to try to expand on
Dorothy's work. Having come from an Iowa City Bell Telephone
family (my father, mother, husband and I all worked there) I was
motivated to research and find additional information about the Iowa
City operators. The following pieces are my contribution.
