African-Americans
of
 Early Day Johnson County

It's Black History Month February 2022. It's an opportune moment to highlight and honor Johnson County's early African-American settlers.

The history of Johnson County is not complete without commemorating African-Americans who chose this place as their home, during it’s early days.  Their journeys must not be lost and forgotten. This new addition to the Johnson County IAGenWeb site is intended to celebrate the lives, achievements, experiences and contributions of our Johnson County African-American pioneers.

Using the 1870 U.S. Census Schedule as a baseline source, I've identified the citizens, whose race was identified as black and who lived in Johnson County at that time.   Many moved on to other locations in the years to follow. Regardless, my desire is to follow, to the extent possible, all 1870 residents and then share their stories. This project will be ongoing.

If you have information and/or photos of a Johnson County African-American ancestor and/or family, I would be happy to help preserve this precious information by publishing it here.
