INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE
To the Citizens of Jefferson County:
I take the liberty to announce myself to you for your favorable
consideration as an independent candidate for the office of Clerk of the
District Court.
I have been a citizen of this county ever since 1846, served three years as a soldier in the late war, was honorably discharged and recently have met with an accident which disenables me from performing my usual occupation.
Under these circumstances I am induced to seek this office.
Most of the old citizens are well acquainted with my character and
capacity for doing business, and I hope to procure enough of your votes
to secure me this office, for which I shall be truly thankful.

Glasgow,

Messrs. JUNKIN & ROBINSON:
The Grant Club in this place held a rousing meeting on Saturday
night last. Messrs. Geo. H. CASE and D. B. MILLER from your city
were present with us, and made able and telling speeches, albeit their
maiden efforts. Mr. MILLER shows a decided talent for public speaking,
and his remarks were listened to with marked attention and elicited frequent
applause.
The Glasgow Brass Band were in attendance and added much the interest of the occasion.
Messrs. John COCHRAN, Chas. UNKRICH and Henry WEBB were appointed a Committee to attend the revision of the Register, and see that every Republican’s name was properly registered.
The citizens of Round Prairie are fully prepared to meet the enemy
at the Ballot Box on next Tuesday, and we intend to do our part in accomplishing
the Waterloo defeat that surely awaits the Mongrel Democracy.
Henry WEBB, Sec’y Grant Club.
The Cedar Township Literary Association was addressed on last Tuesday night by Mr. Ward LAMSON, on the subject of “Education,” which he divided into two parts, viz: “Secular and Religious Education.” Under the latter division, many of the errors and fallacies of religious teaching, both as practised [sic] in the past and at the present time, was set forth and exposed, and many valuable suggestions offered and undeniable truths laid open for inspection; and though they may have been unpalatable to some, yet they should be received in the same friendly spirit in which they were given.
The whole discourse will no doubt produce much serious reflection,
and we hope will awaken a deeper interest in, and a more thorough investigation
of, the great principles of science and religion.
The speaker was listened to with the most profound attention, and
at the close of the address was vociferously applauded.
The President of the Association announced that Rev. Thos. MERRILL,
of Fairfield, would address us on next Monday night.
CEDAR.
