Painful Death.--- On Thursday morning last, Dec. 17th --- at the house of John V. MYERS --- Miss Elizabeth HUNT was found in convulsions.  She was up-stairs at the time, and the noise made by her attracted Mr. MYERS’ attention.  Medical assistance was called in, but no relief was given her, and she continued in convulsions until death terminated her existence.  She was unconscious all the time.  Miss HUNT was about 28 years of age.  She has been here at various times during the last seven or eight years, and at the present was visiting friends.  We believe she contemplated opening a millinery shop in Fairfield.  The testimony of physicians at the coroner’s inquest went to prove that she had died from the effects of strychnine, and the appearance of the body after death condrmed [sic] this testimony.  No cause could be assigned why she should poison herself.  After a post mortem examination, and the examination of several witnesses, the jury returned a verdict of:  “Came to her death from causes unknown to the jury.”  One of Miss HUNT’s sisters came here and took the body to Chicago for burial.

   For the Fairfield Ledger.
DIED.--- At Fairfield, Iowa, Dec. 14, 1868, Sophia H., wife of Rev. A. S. WELLS, aged 63 years and 6 months.  Her disease was the second stroke of paralysis.

As she never recovered her consciousness, she was unable to give the parting salutations of an affectionate wife and mother or an assurance of her triumph over death in the last conflict, by the faith of Jesus.  But the latter we may draw from her life.  For more than forty years she has been a member of the visible church.  She chose the society of God’s people, searched the Scriptures daily, and loved God’s worship in all its forms.  Of late she had felt an unusual interest on the subject of personal religion, and in all the special means employed to promote the piety and fruitfulness of the church.

Although she was not as active a christian worker as she would have been if she had not been hindered by a mistaken apprehension of the text--- “Let your women keep silence in the church” --- yet we cannot doubt that she received and rested upon Christ as the Rock of her Salvation and her only foundation of hope, or that she died in the Lord, and therefore sleeps in Jesus.  Her death, although sudden and unexpected to all, was an easy one;  and she will be greatly missed, not only by her bereaved companion and her affectionate children, but by a wide circle of her acquaintances and friends.  May it lead us all to get ready to live only to the Lord, and then we shall be sure of a happy death and a glorious immortality. Com.
