Thomas SHEETS from John FAMULENER [end of column cut off]
Rev. AXLINE’s School.---
A peep of a few minutes into Rev. AXLINE’s school is enough to satisfy
the impartial observer that things educational go on about as well there
as in any school of the same grade. Upon entering the room we met
with such a cordial greeting as only such genial spirits as Mr. A. can
give. Of German extraction, his features round and full, in body
heavy set and erect, in expression of countenance open and frank, few men
exhibit a better person than he. As a teacher he is affable, kind
and attentive, has the universal esteem and the confidence of his pupils.
As a minister, he is clear and persuasive in his pulpit addresses, and
sympathetic; social as a pastor, and has the love of his flock.
At the time we entered the room the students were all engaged in writing,
and such was the attention of everyone to duty that we could scarce detect
a sheep’s eye glance towards us.--- This is as it should be, and
speaks plainly the excellent discipline of the school. A brief exercise
in spelling followed the writing, in which all took part, standing in rows
on three sides of the room. Taken all together the school is in excellent
order and progressing finely, and we commend it and the excellent Principal
to the favorable consideration and patronage of the lovers of education
near and far. N. W.
