Marriages with greenback accompaniments are pleasant visitors at the LEDGER office.--- May peace, pleasantness and prosperity be always with the hapyy [sic] couple, who in their joys had the thoughtfulness to remember the poor editor.
ANOTHER FALSEHOOD.
“A perpetuation of the Freedman’s Bureau, with its annual hundred millions for the tax payers to pay.” Published editorially in the Iowa Democrat; and copied, we believe, from the La Crosse Democrat.
The following sworn statement of the expenses of the Freedmen’s Bureau, since its organization, will show what a lie is contained in the above:
Total cost of the Bureau for three years $9,954,370.72
Or per annum 3,518,123.57
A large part of these expenditures was for the benefit of Southern
whites reduced to poverty by the Rebellion.
O. O. HOWARD, Com’r.
[Ed. note: Per annum costs should be $3,318,123.57; original newspaper clearly shows $3,518,123.57 though.]

Lie Nailed.---
Mr. BLEAKMORE in his speech at the court house stated that the cost of
collecting the internal revenue of Jefferson county exceed [sic] the amount
collected, and he based his statement on official information. Now
the last number of the Fairfield Ledger gives the official figures
from H. S. MORRILL, Deputy Collector at Keokuk, in detail, and the result
is, amount collected $6,117.51. Cost of collection, $1,036.70.
Amount realized over and above cost, $5,080,81. So the statement
was a lie, made out of whole cloth and Mr. B. must stand before this community
convicted of falsehood, until he makes his statement good.---
