TEACHERS’ MEETING
 Union School Room,
 April 4, 1868.

Association called to order at 10 A.M.

Mr. McCLAIN was called on, and made some pertinent remarks on the method of teaching Orthography.  He thinks he would teach pupils to spell by sound, and not teach them the number of sounds.

Object lesson conducted by D. BROWN.  Some interest was manifested.  Mr. MURRAY made some remarks as to the importance of object teaching.  He illustrated by conducting a lesson (for a few moments) on coal as an object.

A short and interesting exercise in Phonetics was then conducted by Mr. BROWN.  Meeting adjourned.

 AFTERNOON
Select reading by C. S. McCLAIN.  He displayed marked elocutionary powers, and brought the subject feelingly to his hearers.  Penmanship, by J. S. LOWELL.  Mr. LOWELL thinks the Spencerian much the best system.  Would not teach the principles to small pupils.  Would explain each letter, giving the number of convex, concave and straight lines of which it is composed.

Mr. OGDEN spoke at some length on the teacher’s duties.

Essay --- “Graded Schools in the County,”--- by W. B. MURRAY.

The following resolutions were read and adopted:

Resolved, That no person be appointed on programme who is absent, and that it be ascertained whether each one, whose name is on the programme, will perform the part assigned, and if not some one else be appointed.

On motion, W. B. MURRAY was appointed editor, and Mr. MORRISON assistant editor of the educational column of the LEDGER.  The following programme for the next meeting of the association was then read and adopted:
