GREAT SWEDISH REUNION WILL BE HELD AT FOUR CORNERS ON 17 MAY

... In the cemetery west of Four Corners, the location of the first Swedish Baptist church in America, the building long since gone. "Four Corners" is a prominent name in the annals of Swedish emigration to America. Many of the present residents of the country trace their ancestry back to this little community a few miles north of Lockridge. It is also the center from which many families went out to assist in populating many of the more western states.... Among the early Baptists were Olof PETERSON, Peter CARLSON and Magnus CARLSON. These three men later moved to Stromsburg, Nebr., where they raised large families. Their children and grandchildren are today prominent citizens in that section of Nebraska.... The two CARLSON brothers married two of the sisters of Gustaf O. SCHILLERSTROM, who was one of the first trustees and deacons of the Four Corners church....

Two grandchildren of one of the founders of the church, Alan and Jane SCHILLERSTROM, were baptized at the same place in Brush Creek that the first converts were baptized, three fourths of a century ago. Gust SCHILLERSTROM is the father of the children, and Gustaf SCHILLERSTROM was their grandfather.

St. John's Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod), Four Corners, Iowa.
Congregation organized 1890-91.
Church building erected and dedicated, 1893.

The map of Jefferson County, Page 210, 1875 Atlas of Iowa, shows four churches at and near Four Corners. The westernmost church building of course is the Swedish Methodist, next east and also on south side of the east-west road, is the Swedish Lutheran erected in 1860. Both are in Sec. 21, Lockridge Township. In the S.W. corner of the N.W. quarter of Sec. 22 is the Swedish Baptist Church, and east of the "four corners" in Sec. 22, on south side of road, appears the fourth church building.

Apparently the Swedish Baptist Church building, built of "Logs hewn from the virgin forest on these hillsides," had disappeared before 1888.

The "Fairfield Tribune", Dec. 27, 1888, carried the story of a reporter's visit to Jefferson's "Oestreich." About Four Corners, he wrote: "The village contains a German Lutheran church (St. Paul's), with large building and strong congregation. It is in charge of Rev. Albert PFISTER." In the same story, Rev. A. PFISTER is shown as pastor of Hope Lutheran Church near Germanville (American Lutheran Synod), which he served from 1876 to 1892.

CONFERENCE TO MEET AT FOUR CORNERS.

The regular fall sessions of the Southeastern Conference of Lutheran pastors will be conducted in the St. John's Lutheran Church of Four Corners, near Lockridge, October 30-31. Thirty-five pastors will attend this meeting, representing the southeastern corner of the Iowa District of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, the largest individual synod of the Lutheran Church in America.

Doctrinal papers, exegetical treatises, and discussion of pastoral problems will occupy the attention of the pastors assembled. Strict adherence to the Lutheran principle of complete separation of church and state will prevent any approach to political discussion during these sessions. These pastors deplore the modern perversion of pulpit and church for the purpose of spreading political propaganda.

St. John's Lutheran Church, a member of the Missouri Synod, will entertain these pastors. Pastor E. F. SCHWIDDER has arranged a complete program for the two days of sessions. Pastors Theo SCHLIEPSIECK, of Vinton, and H. MAAS of Lowden will preach during the services on Tuesday evening. Papers will be ready by Pastors HAPPEL, of Wilton Junction; HARMS, of Davenport; WOLTER, of Homestead; RICKELS, of Atkins.

FORTIETH JUBILEE.

Annually the St. John's Evangelical Church at Four Corners observes a Mission Sunday. Then, of course, that greatest of all human endeavors, viz., soul saving work is the central theme of praying and preaching, of singing and reading. Last Sunday was St. John's Mission Sunday, and in the afternoon the Rev. L. ESCHBACH of Grand Mound, Iowa, conducted a well-attended Mission service.

But this year the observation of Mission Sunday was combined with the celebration of an anniversary. Nearly forty years had passed since the erection of the congregation's house of worship. This fact was rightly recognized in a jubilee service Sunday morning, Pastor H. MAAS of Lowden, Iowa, a former minister, breaking the Bread of Life. He spoke from Rev. 3, 7-13. His timely and forceful sermon should long be remembered.

In the noon hour, the ladies of the congregation more than stilled the bodily hunger of all the worshippers.

Following are a few data culled from the church book: July 16, 1893, Candidate F. WOLTER was ordained and installed. Three preceding years the congregation had been served by Pastors DORNSEIF and STROBEL of Wilton Junction and by Pastors BRANDES and OHLERT of What Cheer.

December 10, 1893, a church, 36x22, was dedicated. August 31, 1894, the congregation joined the Missouri Synod. March 2, 1896 the parsonage was completed.

During the Rev. H. MAAS's pastorate, a school was built, a steeple was added to the church, and a bell placed in the steeple.

The following eleven men have been resident pastors: F. WOLTER, 1893-1896; F. BONOVSKY, 1896-1899; Wm. NOLTE, 1899-1904; C. G. MENNICKE, 1904-1907; H. MAAS, 1908-1912; J. A. DUERR, 1912-1915; L. RICHMANN, 1917-1920; T. SCHLIEPSIEK, 1920-1922; W. E. LECKBAND, 1922-1925; E. F. SCHWIDDER, 1926-1929; Robert GROTE, 1929-1933.

For this period of forty years, the church book records 129 baptisms, 106 confirmations, 34 marriages, and 41 burials. The congregation today numbers 76 souls, 54 communicants, and 18 voting members..... Robert GROTE.

TO OBSERVE 50TH YEAR.
St. John's Lutheran near Lockridge celebrates Golden Anniversary.

Next Sunday, Aug. 1, St. John's Lutheran congregation of near Lockridge will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the ordination and installation of its first pastor and the building of the church. It was in 1893 that the congregation called its first resident pastor, the Rev. F. WOLTER and in the same year that the present church building was built.

Two anniversary services will be held to celebrate this occasion, one at 11 a.m. in the morning and the other at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. The Rev. W. WENDT will preach the afternoon service. During the afternoon there will be a roll call of all who were ever confirmed in this church. All interested have an invitation to attend.

A bit unusual is the fact that 11 of the 12 pastors who have served this congregation in the 50 years of its existence are still living, including the first resident pastor. Included among present members of the congregation today are two of the charter members of the congregation of fifty years ago. The Rev. Alton KOCH of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, is the current pastor.

ANOTHER COUNTRY CHURCH WILL DROP FROM RURAL SCENE.

The trustees of the St. John Lutheran church located at Four Corners announced today that they have sold the church building and parsonage to Roy STATTLER (sic - STATLER) whose farm adjoins the church property.

The contents of the church will be sold at public auction next Saturday, April 7.

The sale of the old church building will take away another of the few remaining rural churches in the county.

The St. John Lutheran church was built in 1893 and regular services were held in its sanctuary until about five years ago when the congregation grew so small it was impracticable to keep the church open.

At the time it was closed, it was served by the Rev. Alton KOCH, pastor of the Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant. After the St. John Lutheran Church closed, most of the congregation began attending services at the Mt. Pleasant church where Rev. KOCH has served for over 15 years.

Despite the fact the church building has been closed for over five years, the congregation still continues to function, having its trustees, and holds voter's meetings.

Members of the board of trustees include August LUEDTKE, Rudolph RAUSCHER and Paul PASCH.

The announcement made today didn't say if or when the buildings were going to be dismantled. They are located across the road north from the store in Four Corners.
