Cumberland-Covenantor-Steel Cemetery |
|
Location: Liberty Township, section 27.
From Juniper go East on 260th to the grain bins and walk in south along
the fence. Climb the fence and continue south to the gate.
Crawl over the gate and walk southeast to the cemetery. (see township map.)
Burials: 1842 to 1929.
Condition: The cemetery is in bad shape.
There are 105 stones that have fallen, are leaning or are cracked. This is
the only cemetery in the county with old poured bases but the stones are
long gone.
Mowed: Nicely mowed.

"There is good news concerning the cemetery.
Most of the brush in the cemetery was cut down this last fall (2002).
I visited it in January and it was in much better shape than it was in
June. There had been other cleaning as well. I had to dig down
to read Sophronia Prewitt's age in June; in January the top of the
concrete base had been cleared and the whole stone could be viewed."
