ADAMS, Aaron
P.O. Monroe. He was born in Allegheny Co., PA in 1828, where he
remained until 1854, and then moved to this State and settled in this
county about three miles west of Monroe. In 1862 he responded to his
country's call and enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant in co. E. 40th Regt.
I.V.I. He served three years, was honorably discharged and returned
home. He was appointed Postmaster in Aug 1866, which office he has
held ever since. He married Miss L. P. GREGORY in Marion Co., IA.
She was born in Louisa Co., IA. They have eight children. Mr Adams
and family are members of the United Presbyterian Church. He is a
Republican, straight.

Cashier of Bank of Monroe. He was born in Washington Co., PA in 1837
and was 3 years old when his parents moved to Pittsburgh, remaining
there until 1845. They went next to Ohio, then to Marion Co., IA.
in 1855. In Dec 1856 he came to this county and engaged in the
mercantile business, which he continued until 1874, then engaged in
banking which he has continued ever since. He married Miss Mary
TEFFT in this city, she was born in Washington Co NY. They have six
children: Cora A., Robert Edgar, Walter T., Abbie D., Mary A., Guy
Dix.. Mr. Anderson has always been a Democrat. He is now Treasurer
of the School Board, and he and family are members of the Baptist
Church. He is also a member of the A. F. & A. M.

BARNES, Hodgen
Farmer, Sec. 26, P.O. Monroe. He was born in England in 1823 and
came to this country with his parents in 1833. They settled in
Pittsburgh, PA. While in Pittsburgh, he married Miss Mary Ann
THOMAS. They moved to this county in 1869. They have six
children-- Mary E., Eliza B., Helen J., Sarah W., Frank C., and
Jonathan Howard. Mr. Barnes is a Republican, and is a member of the
present Board of Township Trustees to which he was elected two years
ago. He owns 160 acres of land on a portion of which he has found
several chunks of almost pure copper, and also several pieces of gold
quartz rock, one piece almost the size of a large hickory nut
was found to contain about three dollars in pure gold. The existence
of these floats goes to prove that there may be vast gold and copper
mines in the vicinity. There were two of Mr. Barnes' brothers in the
army--John and William; John served three years in a PA regiment, and
was honorably discharged. William died from the effect of wounds
received in the front at Petersburg.

BARTHOLOMEW, H. C.
Of the firm of Card & Co., furniture manufacturers, Monroe, Iowa. He
was born in Walworth,WI in 1843, where he remained until twenty years
of age. He then came to Buchanan Co., IA, thence to this town in 1865.
He married Miss Ellen M. CARD in Buchanan Co., IA in March 1865. She
was born in Broome Co., NY. They have three children--Eva, Carrie
L., and Della M. Mr. B. is Secretary of the I.O.O.F.. He is a
Republican. They are members of the Congregational Church.
BATEMAN, M. W.
Deputy Sheriff and Constable, Monroe. He was born in Evansburg, PA in
1839 and came to Van Buren Co., IA in 1864. He crossed the plains
with an ox team to Idaho, that land of promised gold, in his care,
however, it proved to be all promise and no gold. In 1865 he
returned to IA and engaged in the grain trade at this place, thus
being the first to engage in that business in Monroe, continuing
until 1874, when he was appointed Deputy Sheriff, and elected
Constable, which offices he has been the incumbent since. He married
Miss Jane SULGROVE, in Van Buren Co., IA. She was a native of
Indiana. They have six children. He is a Republican.

Coal merchant, Monroe. He was born in Derbyshire, Eng. in 1832, and
came to this country in 1857. He stopped in Iowa City, this State,
about two weeks, then went to Rock Island Co., IL, and was there two
years, thence to Henry Co., IL until 1856, when he removed to this
county. He owns twenty-eight acres of coal land in Sec 33, Fairview
Twp. and seventy-five acres of land in Marion Co., sixty acres being
coal land. He employs sixteen men during the Winter months taking
out coal. He married Miss Ann ROLLAND in England. He is a
Republican, and a member of the I.O.O.F.

county in 1876, and to Monroe in November 1877, and engaged in his
present business. He had one brother James, who enlisted in an OH
regiment during the war of the rebellion, and was killed in the
service.

Proprietor of coal bank, Sec. 33, P.O. Monroe. He is a native of
Yorkshire, England, born 6 Feb 1828. He married Miss S. DUNKERLEY in
England, and they came to this country in 1856. They settled in Rock
Island Co., IL where they remained until 1866, and then moved to this
county. They have five children living-- Samuel, married to Miss B,.
Lackey; Melvina, married to Fremont Lummey; James, Mary and Robert.
In 1871 Mr. Buckley was appointed Inspector of Coal Mines, which
office he held until 1876, when he resigned, he was also a member of
the board of Township Trustees from 1871 to 1876. He was elected
Township Assessor in 1877, which office he now holds. He is also
Secretary of School and has been for three years. He had one
brother, James, in the army during the war of the rebellion, who
served with the 126 IL V. C. He was severely wounded in the siege of
Vicksburg, and died in the service 18 Jan 1864. He is a Republican,
and owns 188 acres of land, 100 acres of it being underlaid with four
feet of coal.

to do all kinds of work in their line. Mr. Card was born in Broome
Co NY in 1845, and in 1856 he moved with his parents to Wisconsin.
In 1860 they moved to Buchanan Co., IA, thence to this county in
1861. He married Miss Mattie M. LANGAN in this city in 1868. She

CHADWICK, Thomas
Assistant Cashier of the Bank of Monroe. He was born near Manchester,
England in 1832, where he remained until he was 14 years of age. He
had a strong passion to engage in a sea-faring life and from his 14th
until his 18th year, we find him sailing from England to India,
China, Asia and Africa. In the latter country he remained one year,
most of which time he was within two degrees of the equator. In 1850
he returned to England and engaged as Cashier in an importing house
in Manchester, for about 4 years. He then emigrated to this country,
bringing his mother, brother and sister with him. They stopped in
Iowa City, IA where he engaged in the forwarding and commission
business until 1862, when he was offered the position of
Superintendent of the Moline Plow Works in Moline, IL which he held
for four years. At the end of that time he came to Newton where he
was associated with the First National Bank until 1875 when he moved
to this city. He is a Republican. In 1876 he was elected Mayor of
Monroe. He is the present Secretary of Fairview Lodge, A. F & A. M,
is Secretary of the Gebel Chapter, R. A. M. U. D.. He married Miss
LANCASTER in Tiskilwa, IL in 1852. She was born on the River Tyne,
near Newcastle, Eng. They have four children-- Clara, Charles H.,
William A., and Mary Ellen.

1872. He then came West, remaining one year, at the end of which

years. He next entered the office of Judge DICKEY at Mt. Gilead and
commenced the study of law. He was admitted to the Iowa bar 10 Nov
1876. He married Miss Mary E. EYERLY, in this city, in Nov. 1876.
He is a Republican.

COWLES, George M.
Bookkeeper at Langan and Tafts, Monroe. He was born in Summit Co.,
OH in 1849, removed to this city with his parents in 1855. He
married Miss Emma FOSTER in Indianola, IA. She was born in Indiana
in 1848. They have one child-- Fannie, born in Monroe 25 Dec 1874.
He is a Republican, and a member of the Masonic Fraternity, also a
member of the A.O.U.W. He was elected City Treasurer in 1877 and in
1878 and is the present incumbent of that office. His father, Oliver
Cowles, was born in NY in 1808. Me married Miss Hanna M. OLMSTEAD,
Otsego Co. NY in 1830, and in 1838 they moved to Summitt Co., OH,
thence to this county in 1855. They have nine children all of whom
are living. One of their sons served during the war of the
rebellion, he served three years and was honorably discharged.

CUNNINGHAM, Joseph
Proprietor of boot and shoe shop, Monroe. He
was born in Rappahannock Co, VA in 1842. While he was a boy,
his parents moved to OH where he remained until the breaking out
of the war of the rebellion. He enlisted in co. C, 22nd Ohio V.
I. He served three months, and at the expiration of that time
he re-enlisted in co. H., 73rd Ohio V. I., served in that
regiment until 3 Mar 1865. He was then promoted Captain of Co.
D, 188th Ohio V. I. He was in the battles of Morefield,
Winchester, Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg,
Chancellorsville, New Baltimore, Gettysburg, Chattanooga, Lookout
Mountain, Atlanta and a series of battles around that place. After
discharge he returned to OH remaining there until January 1866. He
married Miss Fannie BAIN in this county in 1867. They have four
children-- Charley B., A. Blanche, Ralph A. and Archie N. Mr.
Cunningham is a Republican.

DALRYMPLE, A. L.
Druggist, Monroe. He was born in Knox Co., OH in 1824, and moved to
Mills Co., IA in 1853. He was appointed Deputy Treasurer in 1858 and
1859. In 1864 he moved to Newton and engaged in the drug business
until 1865, then moved to Monroe and engaged in the hardware business
in which he remained but a short time. He married Miss Anna E.
GALLHER in Knox Co OH. They have three children-- Preston, Elton,
and Myrtle. He is a Republican, and a member of the A.F. & A. M.
He and his wife are members of the Baptist Church. Mr. Dalrymple has
a drug store on the west side of the square, and keeps a full line of
fresh drugs, medicines, paints, oils, etc.

Retired, Monroe. He was born in Warren Co OH in 1809 and in 1830
went to Vermillion Co IL. He served in the Black Hawk during the
years 1831-32. He came to this state in 1846, and to this county in
1847, settling in Des Moines Twp. He laid out the village of
Vandalia where he built grist and saw mills which were run under is
supervision sixteen years. He was also engaged in the mercantile
buisness in Vandalia for six years. He owns 300 acres of land in Des
Moines Twp., the village of Vandalia being located on a portion of
it; also 480 acres of land in Guthrie Co., IA. He was elected County
Surveyor in the early days of this county, and held this position for
several years. He has also held various local offices. He has been
married twice, first wife being Miss Sarah SHEHRER, and his present
wife is Irene PEIRCE. He has six children-- two of his sons were in
the Union Army during the war of the rebellion-- William W. and James
Edwin. They served in Co. E. 14th I. V. I. and were honorably
discharged. Mr. Deakin was originally a Whig, but on the decline of
that party became a Republican.

born in Jefferson Co., NY in 1833, and in 1858 he came West and
engaged in milling in Dubuque, IA, until the Spring of 1865. He then
moved to Pella, Marion Co., IA where he ran the Washington Flour
Mills until 1867. He then moved to this town which he has made his
home. He married Miss Isabella RICHARDSON in Dubuque, IA 8 Sep 1862.
She was also born in Jefferson Co. NY. They have two
children-- Minnie, born in Marion Co, and Alice, born in this county.
DIXON, George W.
Of the firm of Dixon, Fisher & Co., dealers in hardware, Monroe.
He was born in Shelby Co., OH in 1836 and came to Monroe in 1867,
engaging in the hardware business. He married Miss Sarah A. HOVER in
Allen Co., OH. She was born in Lima, Allen Co. Lima is situated on
the Ottawa stream and was the old camping ground of the Shawnee
Indians. It is the heart of the historic interest of Allen Co. It
was the scene of her most exciting Indian councils and the home of
half her legends and traditions. Their old Council House alone is
left. It stands there yet a monument to a now forgotten and almost
extinct race. During the war of the rebellion Mr. Dixon enlisted in
Co F, 20th Reg. Ohio Vol. for four months. At the expiration of that
time he enlisted in Co B, 81st Ohio Reg. Vo., and was promoted to
first Lieutenant in June 1864, and promoted to Captain immediately
afterward. He and his wife are members of the Baptist Church. They
have six children (not named..JA) He is a Republican. During the
time he was in the service he was in a number of battles, the
principal ones were Shiloh, Resaca, Corinth and siege of Atlanta. He
was in the service a few months over three years, and was honorably
discharged 20 Dec 1864.

1834, where he remained until 1859, when he went to Knox Co., OH.
There, he married Miss Sarah M. WRIGHT, 22 Sep 1862. She was born in
Ohio. Mr. Ferguson enlisted in Co F, 121st Ohio V. I. and served
until the war was over. He was honorably disharged in June 1865.
He was in a number of engagements, the principal onces being the
battles of Chickamauga, Kenesaw Mountain, Resaca, and all through the
Atlanta campaign. The war being over, he returned to Knox Co., OH,
remaining until the Fall of 1876, when he moved to this place. Mr.
F. is a Republican and a member of the council. He has held other
local offices. He and his wife are members of the M. E. Church.
There were two of his brothers in the army, also-- Joseph and Lemon.
Both served in Ohio regiments, and were honorably discharged.

honorably discharged 22 Jul 1865. In 1864 he was appointed
Commander of Fort Alexander in St. Louis MO. He married Sarah J.
BENNINGTON in PA. They have one child-- Ella E. Mr. Flick came to
Monroe in 1871 and keeps a full and complete stock in the harnes
line. He does his own manufacturing, and warrants all his work. He
is a member of the I.O.O.F. and A. F. & A. M.. He is a Republican.

OH until 1844 when he went to LaGrange Co. IN, and was engaged in the
mercantile business in that county. He moved to this county in 1865
and engaged in manufacturing wagons and carriages the first two years
and at the end of that time he engaged in the stock and grain
business. In 1872 he was appointed Director of the N. & M., RR which
position he filled until June 1877. During a portion of that time
was also local Treasurer of the road. He married Miss. H. L. HILL in
La Grange Co IN on 25 Dec 1856. She was a native of New York. They
have five children--Cleaon B. b. 1 May 1859; Florence May b. 13 Oct
1861; Harry T. b. 16 Sep 1866; Lilly P. b. 4 Mar 1871; Nettie b. 19
Sep 1873. During his residence in this county He has held various
railroad offices.

breaking out of the war of the rebellion. He enlisted in Co d., 13th
Regt. I. V. I.. He served until Feb. 1862 when he was honorably
discharged. In 1864 he married Miss S. A. SHAW in Marion Co., this
State. She was born in Ohio. They have three children, Luella,
Lenora, and John R. Mr. Hall is a Republican, and the and the
family are members of the Methodist church. He is a member of the
I.O.O.F. and a leader of the Monroe Cornet Band.

Mayor of Monroe. He was born in Fayette Co., PA in 1822. When he
was 26 he was licensed minister of the Baptist Church and followed
ministerial duties in PA, MD, VA. He was ordained in Greene Co., PA
in 1851. In 1869 he came West settling in this city, and has
pastoral charge of the Baptist Church until 1875. Since this time he
has been Pastor of the Church at Ashland, Wapello Co., two years, and
at Otley, Marion Co., since Jan 1878. He was elected Justice of the
Peace in this place in 1876. He is also President of the School
Board. He married Miss Elizabeth WILLARD in Fayette Co., PA in 1846,
She was born in Meigs Co., OH. They have eight children---William
who married Miss Marth SEALS, Lydia B., James P., George A., Gideon,
Collins B., Henry C., and Libbie D. He is a Republican.

this county and was born in Cumberland Co., PA in 1803. He went to
Ohio in 1828 , and then to IL in 1838 where he remained until May
1843 when he moved to this county and settled on his present farm.
He married Miss Ellen SLAIN. She was a native of Virginia. Mr.
Highlands owns 160 acres of land. He is a Reopublican, and was the
first Justice of the Peace elected in this county. He has witnessed
and endured all the hardships and privations of pioneer life and is
now justly entitled to the comfortable competency he enjoys.

Retired farmer, Monroe. He was born in Carroll Co., VA in 1814 and
remained there until 1831 when he went to Kentucky, thence to
Highland County, OH until 1847 when he moved to this county. He is
one of the pioneer settlers. He married Miss. E. F. LOYD in Highland
Co., OH. She was born in Madison Co., VA. They have had nine
children, six of whom are living---William F., who enlisted in an
Iowa regiment, and was honorably discharged; John H., who also
served in an Iowa regiment and was honorably discharged after three
years service, and died in 1872; James M. who also served in an
Iowa regiment and was honorably discharged; George W, Thomas J.,
Samantha Ann (now Mrs. METTLER); Joseph M., deceased; Martaret E.,
deceased and Amanda J. Mr. Hill owns 122 acres of land. He and wife
are members of the M. E. Church. He is a Republican.

Monroe. Mr. King was born in Edgar Co., IL on the 6th of May 1846,
where he remained until 1855 when he moved with he parents to this
county. He engaged in his present business in 1872. He is a
Republican. His father, John King, was a native of Tennessee. He
married Miss Elizabeth King; they moved to Indiana, thence to
Illinois and from there to this county in 1855, settling on College
Farm, four miles north of Newton where they remained until 1870
when they moved to Newton. Their children were John, who enlisted
in the 21st I. V. I. and served until peace was restored, he was
in several battles and wounded at Stone River, he married Julia
MCCORD of this county; James A. who, at the breaking out of the war,
enlisted in Co., B, 5th I. V. I., was promoted Captain and served until
the close of the war and was honorably discharge. He then went to
Grenville MS remaining until the Spring of 1866. When he was about
to return to his home in the north, he fell a victim of Southern hate
and was foully assassinated. His remains were brought home and
interred at College Farm Cemetery, north of Newton; and A. B. whose
name appears at the head of this sketch.

Grain merchant, Monroe. He was born in Hampden Co., MA in 1819 and
came west in 1854 settling in Wapello Co, this State, where he was
engaged in the drug and mercantile business. He moved to Monroe in
1874 and engaged in the grain trade. He is one of the firm known as
the Monroe Elevator Company, which is composed of himself, Langan,
Weeks, and Gibson. He married Miss Sarah Jane LANGAN in Wapello Co,
and they have three children---Frank L., Waren M., and Willis A. He
is a Republican. He is a friend to education and cheerfully aids any
literary enterprise.
KODER, J.
Attorney at law, office corner of Commercial and Washington streets,
Monroe. He was born 14 Mar 1836, in Ashland Co., OH and came to Iowa
when only a little over 13 years of age. He attended college at
Pella, Marion Co., Iowa. He was married twice and had two children
by his first wife. He was admitted to practice in Marion Co., in
1871 and was admitted to practice in the Federal Courts 3 Mar 1876,
at Des Moines, IA, before Hon. J. F. Dillon. His first wife's name
was Mary A. HART who died in 1861. He was married to this 2nd wife
3 Jul 1862. Her name was Artimisia E. HOWARD. He studied law with
Hon. V. B. Bennett and in 1869, in connection with his preceptor and
H.M. McCully, started the notorious Copperhead at Pella. He was
later engaged in the publication of the Des Moines Valley Herald, At
Monroe, taking that paper with a circulation of 150 and when he sold
out to J. S. HARPER of IL, it had a circulation of nearly 800.
KODER, S. He was born 14 Nov 1842 in Richland Co. OH, remaining
there until the Fall of 1847, at which time his parents removed to
Iowa, settling near Eddyville, in Wapello Co. They remained there
till the Fall of 1851, when they removed to Jasper Co., IA. After a
few months they moved to Red Rock Twp, Marion Co. His mother still
resides there, a widow, having lost her husband 5 Jun 1871. S. Koder
remained with his mother until the Spring of 1877, and then removed
to Jasper Co. He married 8 mar 1876 at which time he was engaged in
the study of law under the tutelage of his brother, J. Koder. He had
been a farmer prior to that time.

then went to Leavenworth, KS, thence to Tecumseh, NE, thence to
Newton, this county, all in the Winter of 1869. He came to Monroe in
1873. He married Miss Sarah Fenner in Newton, in 1870, she was born
in Highland Co., OH. They have two children living: Annie Myrtle,
and Gertrude May. They lost two: Martin and Effie. Dr. Loar's drug
store is on the south side of the public square.

1865. She was born in Washington Co., NY,in 1846. They have five

Dec 1870; Cora I., 11 may 1875; Florence O., 23 Apr 1878. Mrs.
McKee's father Peter Bain, was a native of NY, and was born 2 Feb
1809. He married Miss J. McNeil and they moved to this county 19 Dec
1860. he died 23 Apr 1875. He was a most prominent and worthy
citizen and raised a large family, several of whom are now living in
this county.

came to this county in 1849. he lived in Pittsburgh PA until 1853,
then went to NY and sailed to California where he followed mining
until 1856. In the Fall of that year he returned to Pittsburgh,
remaining until 1861 when he came to this county. He married Miss
Ellen Vinyard in this county in 1868. She was born in Linn Co. in
1846.
They have three children--Arestine Sarah, Laura N. and Clemenza Edna.
During the war Mr. Mateer enlisted in Co E, 40th Iowa V. I. He was
honorably discharged 2 Aug 1865He was in several battles, among
them being the siege of Vicksburg. There were two of Mrs. Mateer's
brothers in the army--L. C., and Thomas J. Vinyard. L. C. enlisted
in the 4th IA V. C. and died in the service. Thomas J. also enlisted
in an IN regiment. He served three years and seven months and was
honorably discharged. Their father William Vinyard, was a native of
Virginis. He was born 24 Nov 1811 and came to Linn Co., in 1830. He
married Sarah Carroll who was b. in Canada. They came to Jasper Co.
in 1865. He was ordained Deacon of the Missionary Baptist Church in
Marion Co, and died in this county in 20 Aug 1875. Mr. Mateer and
family are members of the United Presbyterian Church, he is a
Republican, and owns 200 acres of land.

and manufacturers of and dealers in flour, feed, cornmeal etc., three
blocks south of the square, Monroe. These mills have been running
over two years and are giving entire satisfaction in their work. they
keep constantly running four run of buhrs, a corn sheller is attached
to their mills in which farmers can shell their corn while waiting
foer their grist. The flour made in these mills is being used in
all the towns in the vicinity. Their father, Samuel Monlux who is
about the mills, is a practical millwright, and an old citizen of
this county. They employ a first-class miller. The Monlux family
are natives of Ohio. They came to this county in 1869.
