Metz Man Dies Today in Newton
Former Merchant Here; Came to Metz District When Two Years Old
C.B. Westbrook, 85, Metz area farmer and former Newton business man, died at 3:30 o'clock this morning at Skiff Memorial hospital.
Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Morgan Funeral Home in Newton, Rev. L. Churchill Austin will officiate. Burial will be in the Newton Union cemetery.
In Log Cabin
More familiarly known as "Uncle Charley," Mr. Westbrook was a pioneer resident of Jasper county, moving here with his parents, Abram and Livonia Swetland Westbrook, in 1864 when he was only two years old. He had been born in Nov. 2, 1862. The family settled in a log cabin in the Metz area.
He married Harriet L. Morgan of Monroe in October, 1885. For many years he was a partner in
The Miller and Westbrook dry goods store on the west side of the square. He was also associated in a dry goods store at Oskaloosa for several years.
Oil Station
In 1919, he and Fred Evans started an oil station on First avenue East, which is presently the Deep Rock station. He operated the station until he retired several years ago, but still retained an ownership interest.
Mr. Westbrook's wife and their one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Imogene) Zickel of Kellogg, who died last June 8, preceded him in death. Survivors include one brother, W. S. Westbrook, of near Newton, and nieces and nephews. ~ The Newton Daily News, May 17, 1948, Page 1.

Lee Westbrook Dies in Sleep
Prominent Newton Resident Passes Away This Morning - No Funeral Arrangements Made.
Lee Westbrook, well known resident of Newton for more than 60 years, died this morning in his sleep, following a long illness with heart trouble. He had spent a bad night but had fallen asleep in the early morning hours. At 10 o'clock his wife, who had constantly attended him, became alarmed at his long sleep and discovered that he had died peacefully. Mrs. Andrew Howard, a sister of Mrs. Westbrook was with her at the time.
Lee Westbrook was born in Morrow County, Ohio, June 26, 1843 and was the son of Hiram and Maria Westbrook. The family moved to Iowa in 1864 and Mr. Westbrook has made his home here since tht time, and is the last member of that family.
He was married to Miss Emma Townsend, May 7, 1868 in Newton.
Mr. Westbrook has been county clerk and has worked in the clerk's office for many years. He was also a successful Jeweler here.
He was a member of the Masonic order and was reported to be the oldest member of the Newton lodge.
Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed. The body is now at Murdoch's Funeral home. ~ The Newton Daily News, July 28, 1926.
