Shurr Westbrook, Lifetime Resident,
Dies Early Today

Shurr Westbrook, 79, who lived his entire life on a farm south of Sugar Grove Grange, died today at 6:30 a.m. at Skiff Memorial hospital.

Mr. Westbrook was born in a log cabin on the farm April 23, 1875, to Abram and Livonia Swetland Westbrook. He was a charter member of the Palo Alto Grange where he served as secretary for a number of years and was a 50-year member of the Newton Masonic Lodge this year.

Funeral services will be held at Morgan-Loehr funeral home at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. W. W. Johnson of United Presbyterian church officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Grove cemetery.

The deceased was educated in Jasper county schools and Hazel Dell Academy and married Elta L. Rider Feb. 9, 1896, at the home of her parents near Ira.

Survivors are his wife; two grandchildren, Duane Westbrook and Mrs. Kenneth (Charlene) McGregor; one great grandchild, Janet McGregor; and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jeanette Scheffers. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, and five brothers. ~ The Newton Daily News, February 8, 1955.

Westbrook Funeral Monday Afternoon

Funeral services for Elta Leona Westbrook, 83, who died of injuries suffered in a fall Thursday at her home near Metz, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Johnson Funeral home.

The Rev. W. W. Johnson of the United Presbyterian church will officiate and burial will be in Sugar Grove cemetery.

Survivors are seven sisters, Mrs. Louise John, Mandan, N. D., Miss Jennie Rider, Newton, Mrs. Kenneth Parker, Kansas City, Kan., Mrs. Frank Baker, Newton, Mrs. Belle Coughlan, Marshalltown, Mrs. Ethel Dodd, LaCrescenta, Calif., and Mrs. Earl Moyer, West Des Moines; one grandson, Duane L. Westbrook, with whom she lived; one granddaughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Charlene) McGregor, Reasnor; and two great granddaughters.

Mrs. Westbrook was born to Clinton and Elizabeth Rider near Ira Nov. 18, 1873, and married W. Shurr Westbrook Feb. 9, 1898. He died two years ago as did one son in 1935.

She was a lifetime resident of Jasper county. She lived at Ira until her marriage, then moved to a farm near Metz where she has lived since. She was a member of the Christian Church, Eastern Star, and a charter member of Palo Alto grange. ~ The Newton Daily News, May 17, 1957.
