Sudden Death
Last Wednesday morning John M. Reed, one of the
proprietors of the Reed Mill, seven miles west of Newton,
fell dead in his own house. He was in usual health, rose
early to relieve some neighbors watching his sick child, and
without a moment's notice of premonitory pain, fell dead
upon the floor. He was about 55 years old, and leaves a
family. He was an excellent citizen, and his loss will be
felt by a large circle of friends. ~ The Newton Free Press,

Death of Mrs. Sarah Reed
Grandma Reed, aged nearly eighty-three years, died at her
home on North Farmer street, about noon on Monday, May 26th.
She had been declining for a long time, and the last few
months of her long and useful life were full of suffering.
But the clouds which had shadowed her mind have now been
cleared away, the pain-racked body is at rest and the deal
old saint has joined the large company of redeemed loved
ones beyond the reach of clouds and suffering.
Her maiden name was Sarah Eichelberger. She was born at
York, Pennsylvania, Dec. 9th, 1819, where most of her
childhood was spent. On the 28th of November, 1844, she was
united in marriage to John M. Reed, at Cambridge City, in
Wayne county, Indiana. In 1856 Mr. and Mrs. Reed with their
family came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Sherman
township, four miles west of this city, where Mr. Reed died
on the 13th of November, 1872., and a few years later Mrs.
Reed moved into town, where she lived until her death. Of
the once happy family of parents and eight children, only
two daughters remain, Mrs. Gertrude McCord and Miss Kate
Reed, both of this city.
Mrs. Reed had been a member of the Presbyterian church
from the time of her childhood, and her beautiful quiet
Christian life has ever been a sweet benediction to all
around her, the influence of which will live forever.
The funeral services were held at the home at 2 o'clock
yesterday after which all that was mortal of Mother Reed was
laid to rest beside her husband and three children in the
Sugar Grove church yard, near the old farm home where so
many happy years of her life had been spent. ~ The Newton
Record, May 29, 1902.
