Hilay S. Phelps
Born: October 14, 1818 in St. Lawrence Co., New York Death of Mother PhelpsMrs. Hilay S. Phelps died at her home in Sherman Township on Tuesday evening, November 2nd, at the ripe old age of seventy-nine years. Mother Phelps was born in St. Laurence County, N. Y., October 14, 1818. She was married to F. E. Phelps July 18, 1833, and moved to Ohio in 1850, and from there to Iowa in 1866, settling on the farm, five miles west of town, where her aged companion died about ten years ago, and which continued to be her home until her death. Mother Phelps was a kind hearted, lovable old lady to whom young and old alike loved to do her honor. She had been a zealous Spiritualist for years and died a firm believer in that faith. She leaves three children Mrs. Vincent of Des Moines, F. R. Phelps of Indiana, and Alfred, the youngest, who with his family have made their home with her for years. The funeral services were held at the Sugar Grove Church on Wednesday afternoon at two oclock, the only service being an address by Andrew Engle very appropriate and full of encouragement and consolation to the bereaved friends. Alfred M. Phelps
Born: January 1858 in Ohio2 Hold Phelps ServicesFuneral services for Alfred Mason Phelps of Des Moines, were held at the Sugar Grove church Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock and burial was in the Sugar Grove cemetery. The funeral address was delivered by Dr. George C. Williams, pastor of the Congregational church. Pallbearers were John Healy, P. H. Healy, John Miller, Dewey Anthony, John Hitchler and Home Clement. Music was furnished by Richard Toedt. Mr. Phelps died at one o'clock Saturday morning at the Broadlawns hospital in Des Moines. The Phelps family are former residents of this city and Mr. Phelps had spent the summer at the John Healy home. He was about 70 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by two daughters, both of Des Moines, Mrs. Walter Cox and Mrs. Hallie Callison. ~ Jasper County Record, October 18, 1928, page 1, column 3. |
Clara Estelle (Allfree) Phelps
Born: November 22, 1859 in Rock Island Co., Illinois6 Clara PhelpsFuneral services for Mrs. Alfred Phelps were held at Sugar Grove Grange Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. Morgan Jones of the First Baptist church of Des Moines in charge. Music was rendered by Harold Finch. The pall bearers chosen were Hallie Callison, Welcome Wyatt, Fred Vincent, Walter Cox, Jim Allfree and Roy Callison, nephews and sons-in-law of the deceased. Those attending the funeral from afar included relatives from Des Moines, Mr. Alfred Phelps, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cox, Mr. and Mrs. Welcome Wyatt, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cox, Hallie Callison, and Mrs. Freshour. Mrs. Alfred Phelps, who lived for 56 years in Jasper county died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Cox, Sunday at 9:15 o'clock after an illness of six months suffering from heart trouble and other complications.' Mrs. Phelps has been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Cox for the past six years. She left Newton for Carroll, where the Cox family lived and when they moved to Des Moines, she and Mr. Phelps accompanied them. For years the Phelps family lived in Sugar Grove neighborhood where Mrs. Phelps enjoyed the friendship of all who knew her. She was a sincere and loving mother and wife and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. She leaves her husband, her two daughters, Mrs. H. J. Callison and Mrs. Walter Cox, and two grandchildren, Richard Cox and Corlis Callison, and one brother H. I..
