Obituary: Mr. Lewis Helphrey

Mr. Lewis Helphrey was born in Licking county, Ohio, December 1st, 1822, died 10 p.m., January 16, 1895, aged 73 years, 1 month and 16 days. The early part of his life was spent with his parents in the county in which he was born. On the 22nd of March, 1849, he was married to Ann Mariah Koontz.

In the fall of 1853, with his wife and children, moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where they spent one year; in 1855, they moved to Newton and the fall of the same year moved on to their farm, where they since resided. For several years he has been a great sufferer, having had five paralytic strokes, the last of which proved fatal.

In 1873 he was converted and joined the Christian church, of which he has since been a member, always living a faithful and devoted life. He bore his sickness without complaint, being reconciled to the end that was to come sooner or later. September 15, 1894, his wife and companion passed away to the glories above where he has now gone to meet her. He leave six children to mourn his departure, three boys and three girls. Their loss is eternal gain. ~ Newton Herald, January 25, 1895.

Obituary: Ann Maria Koontz

Ann Maria Koontz Helphrey was born in Hagerstown, Md., October 10, 1825. While quite a young girl she moved with her parents to Licking county, Ohio. At the age of 24 years she was married to Mr. Lewis Helphrey. In the fall of 1853 they moved to Iowa City, Iowa.

The following year they came to Newton, and the in fall of the same year they came to this place where they have since resided. For several years her health became impaired, but for the past three years she has been a great sufferer, always patient, always hopeful, and fully reconciled to the change which she felt must sooner or later come to her.

While quite a young girl she was converted and united with the Lutheran Church, of which she remained a member 1873, when, with her husband, she found a home in the Disciple Church organized in their immediate neighborhood. Hers was a faithful life -- faithful in the school-room as a teacher, in the home as a mother and a companion, and in the neighborhood as a friend and neighbor; she was always faithful to her duty.

A husband and six children (three boys and three girls) will miss the thoughtful care of a devoted wife and mother. She departed in peace September 15, 1894, at the age of 68 years, 11 months, and 5 days. One daughter has preceded her to the better land. The funeral services took place at their home on Tuesday. ~ The Newton Herald, September 21, 1894.
