Message Brings Sad News of
Death of Mrs. Burl Helphrey
Mr. P. Helphrey received a telegram today which stated
that his son's wife, Mrs. Burl Helphrey, died at 10 o'clock
this morning. He will leave with the body tomorrow and
probably arrive in Newton Tuesday or Wednesday.
They had received two messages before the death message.
The last one was from her physicians and state that she was
dying from diphtheria and pneumonia.
Mrs. Helphrey was Nellie Baker, a daughter of Wm. Baker
of this city and a sister of George Baker west of town.
Only a week ago Mr. and Mrs. Helphrey received a letter
from their son and Mr. Baker at the same time received one
from his daughter. They were bright cheerful letters and no
word of her sickness was mentioned at that time. The news
comes as a great shock to both families. ~ The Newton Daily
News, January 2, 1909.
