W. D. Helphrey Former Resident
Dies in Idaho

Mrs. William A. Moore received word this morning that her uncle, William D. Helphrey, passed away at 2:30 a.m., at Coeur d' Alene, Idaho.

Final rites and burial will be made in Coeur d' Alene, with the K. of P. lodge in charge.

William D. Helphrey was born to Lewis and Ann Maria Helphrey, Aug. 16, 1856, on a farm four and one-half miles southwest of Newton and lived in Jasper county for 50 years. He was married to Louisa Alice Peavey, April 6, 1900, and moved to Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, March 1, 1906 where he has since resided.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sept. 13, 1931, and by two sisters and two brothers, Miss Ellen Helphrey, Mrs. Melissa Ramsay and John and Lewis S. Helphrey.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Susie E. Houck of Newton, and four nieces, Mrs. Ben Apgar of Centerville, Mrs. Harmon Gill of Corydon, Mrs. Frank Gray, Peoria, Ill., and Mrs. William A. Moore of Newton; two nephews, Dr. H. C. Aillaud of Rockwell City, Ia., and William L. Aillaud of Newton, and a number of great nieces and nephews and many friends around Newton and in Coeur d' Alene.

He was a member of the Three-Quarter Century club of the Newton Daily News.

Mr. Helphrey became a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge in Newton, transferring to Coeur d' Alene when he moved there. He was also a member of the Grand Lodge of Idaho and a consistent member of the First Christian church of Coeur d' Alene. ~ The Newton Daily News, January 6, 1947

W.D. Helphrey is Honored at Family Reunion

W.D. Helphrey of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, who is visiting with his sister, Mrs. Susie Houck and also in the homes of his nieces and nephews, was honored at a family reunion Sunday at the W.L. Aillaud home.

A pot luck dinner was served to 41 persons. The feature of the event was the presentation by Mr. Helphrey of an 82 year old quilt to his nephew, P.R. Helphrey.

The quilt was pieced and set together by W.D. Helphrey's great grandmother Burgess, at the age of 93, and was quilted in Coeur D'Alene in 1930 by Mrs. Nancy Action, 74. The quilt is an heirloom which is to be handed down along the line of Helphrey's.
