Joe Benskin Dies Sunday
Long Time Resident of Jasper County Died
After Prolonged Illness
Joe Benskin, 68, long time resident of Jasper county who
lives nine miles north of Newton, died at the Skiff hospital
Sunday morning at 8:15 o'clock. Mr. Benskin had been in poor
health since last August and was brought to the hospital
last Thursday.
Funeral services will be held at the Murdoch Funeral home
Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Interment will be made in
the Metz cemetery.
Mr. Benskin is survived by his wife and four children,
Curtis, Bert, Harley and Mrs. Merle Paul all of Laurel. ~

Obituary: Joseph Benskin
Joseph Benskin, son of Wesley and Jane Benskin, was born
Feb. 5, 1862 in Calhoun county, [Calhoun twp., Richland
Co.] Ill. and died at the Skiff hospital in Newton at
the age of 69 years, 8 months and 3 days.
For 49 years he was a resident of Jasper county, March 9,
1886 he was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Trimble of
Metz and to this union was born one son, Curtis, of Laurel.
Dec 7, 1859, Mrs. Benskin died. A few years later he was
married to Miss Sophia Iske in Newton. To this union was
born three children, Bert L. Benskin, Elsie Jay Paul and
Harley Benskin all of Laurel.
He is survived by his wife, three sons, one daughter, 9
grandchildren, four brothers, John Benskin of Rynard, Ill,
Charles Benskin of Flora, Ill, William Benskin of Kansas
City, Mo. and Berton W. Benskin of Flora Ill., three
sisters, Mrs. Lydia Hitchler of Metz, Mrs. Anna Finch of
Cleveland, Ohio and Mrs. Dora E. Morgan. One sister, Mrs.
Lucy Duke, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were in charge of Rev. Melcher of
Laurel.
The pallbearers were David Iske, Lauren Iske, Charles
Iske, Glen Hesson, Will Hesson and Charles Bair.
The music was furnished by W. P. Stewart and Minnie
Ellerbrock of Laurel accompanied by Della Antle.
Those in charge of the flowers were Mrs. Glen Hesson,
Mrs. Will Hesson, Mrs. Charles Bair and Mrs. Fred Tiedje. ~

Sophia Mather, 88, Dies at Hospital;
Services Friday
Mrs. Sophia Benskin Mather, 88, of Laurel, a longtime
resident of the Newton community, died at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday
at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the
Toland Funeral Home.
The Rev. Darwin Pierce, minister of the Laurel Methodist
Church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Metz
Cemetery near Newton.
Mrs. Mather is survived by two sons, Bert Benskin of
Laurel and Harley Benskin of Laurel; a daughter, Mrs. Merle
Paul of Laurel; four sisters, Mrs. Fred Tiedje of Newton,
Mrs. W. O. Hesson of Newton, Mrs. Charlie Bair of Newton; 10
grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a son,
three brothers and a sister.
Mrs. Mather was a member of the First Presbyterian
Church. She is also a member of the Daily News Three-Quarter
Century Club.
The daughter of William and Nancy Bridges Iske, she was
born Sept. 8, 1873 at Newton.
She was married Sept 20, 1892 to Joe Benskin who died in
1931.
Mrs. Mather moved to Laurel in 1948. ~ The Newton Daily
