GERMAN LUTHERAN OF ST. JOHNS EVANGELICAL p.1
Lincoln -- History by Pauline Lillie
Section 28, Lincoln 79 Township, Range 12, about 8 to 10 miles south
of Victor on Hy. V. 44
History
This cemetery is not very old, for it does not appear in the history
of 1881- Iowa County; Does list a parsonage on the 1874 Atlas; as
taken from church history these people had church in schoolhouses as
early as 1860; However on the 1900 Atlas p. 17, there is a school &
church, together and some distance south the cemetery. This on G.M.
Merck Sr. farm, with land owned in between church and cemetery by
John A. Hahn. 1915 History p. 179 Vol. I. Mr. Merck gave a piece
of his land for a cemetery; German Lutheran of St. Johns Evangel-
ical Lutheran Church. From a church article in the Marengo Pion-
eer dated September 2, 1954, at the Dedication of the new Parochical
School, church history is given.
No outstanding interesting facts, except as given on the stones list-
ed. The cemetery on north "Langstreth" should be checked.
It sits on a side hill, with nice timber, a short distance to the
north. The Weiss stone contains a sketch drawing of the German Luth-
eran church, located north, real pretty. Also several ministers who
gave their lives in the religious service are buried here.
Condition
In perfect condition when I copied the fall of November 16, 1975.
Any stones that needed attention were repaired. All flowers were clean-
ed and there were none of the trash flowers around stones. A fence and
gate, with nice drive complet the frame.
Remarks
Had trouble with several of the beautiful big stones- these deep cut
in the Old German Scrip. Most were easy to read.
Top of one stone was gone, copied and at end of list.
