SALEM TOWNSHIP 1870

70 North, Range 7, West

Historical and Statistical.

Salem Township has amongst its first settlers J. Pidgeon, Aaron Street, W. H. Johnson, Enoch Beard, F. H. Frazier, James Frazier, A Stanley, Wm. Ranson, Nathan Cook and many others.  Aaron Street laid out the original plat of Salem, and used a "grape vine" to make the masurements with.  A Street and P Bowyon build the first building in the Township.

It has large quantities of coal, plenty of good timber, and, like the Township each of it (Jackson,) no Country is better adapted to raising fruit than this strip , south of the Skunk River.  the "Salem Free School Seminary" gives to Salem and the surrounding country, School advantages enjoyed but by a few of the other Towns in the County.
