Henry County, IAGenWeb |
CENTER TOWNSHIP 1870
Town 71 North Range 6 West.
Historical and Statistical.
Center Township was the first settled in the County by one James Dawson, who came in the Spring of 1834, although others came the same year it is thought that he was the first. In 1835 a number of others came, Presley Saunders, who laid out the Town of Mount Pleasant. John M. Hanson, M. H. Barnes, J. Wilson, and Levi Smith, were among them that came in soon after.
Mount Pleasant being the County seat, soon became a Town of some note. The first store there, was opened May 12, 1836, by Colonel J. H. Randolph. The first School was taught by John P. Grantham, the present County Auditor. The Township is well timbered and well watered, and has some of the finest stone quarries in the State. And coal is found in abundance and some of the mines are worked extensively. |
