CANAAN TOWNSHIP 1870
72 North Range 5 West
Historical and Statistical.
Canaan Township - This being one of the prairie Townships, it was not settled until the Spring of 1848, at which Mr. James Lawrence, settled on section 33, where he still resides, and owners the south one half of said section, (320 acres), Robert McCabe, Ambrose Yancy, Thomas Corkhill, Wm. Corkhill, Jacob Hare, and A. Baxter, were amongst the next who came into this Township.
In 1851 there was not a tree except in the south-west corner, where there was a few trees on the creek. Now the many orchards and fine groves that surround nearly every farm house, show by what class of people the Township has been settled. It has more acres of tillable land than any Township in the County. |
