BALTIMORE TOWNSHIP 1870
Town 70 North, Range 5, West
Historical and Statistical.
Baltimore Township was first settled in 1834, on section 32, by Mrs. J. A. Box, who also claims to have been the first settler in the County. Black Hawk, Waupello, Mosquetopa, and Nasheaskunk were among the frequenters at his cabin. The Township is mostly all timber, and settled only on the outskirts or near the River. The villiage of Lowell was laid out M. M. McCarver, and the first house built by Harmon Mathews. Hiram Smith, built the first Mill, which was afterwards washed away by high waters.
It has now two Flouring Mills and five saw Mills, there is an abundance of coal in the Township, though but few of the mines have been worked to any extent. There being so much timber that wood was the cheapest fuel. |
