C. A. Schafer

C. A. Schafer, or Chris Schafer, as he is better known, came to Grundy county in the fall of 1868, which is 56 years ago. He located on a farm 2 miles east of where the town of Wellsburg now is. Later he moved to Wellsburg and was one of the town's first residents.

Mr. Schafer was married to Mary Ruschen on February 12th, 1880, at German Valley, Ill., and all of their married life they have resided in Grundy county. For many years he served as an auctioneer, and he has probably cried more sales than any other man in the county. Mr. Schafer was for six years stewart at the county farm. For about thirty years he and his wife have made their home in Grundy Center.
