Hans Wieben received a message last week that his son, Private Geo. Wieben, was taken ill with pneumonia last Tuesday and was in the hospital at Camp Cody, New Mexico. Mr. Wieben left Friday night for Camp Cody to be near his son. He sent a message to the home folks Wednesday afternoon stating that George was no better, but was holding his own. George is undoubtedly a pretty sick man, but his friends hereabouts hope he will soon be fully recovered.

First Grundy Soldier Death

George Wieben Died of Pneumonia at Camp Cody

Our first Grundy county soldier boy to die while in the service of his country was George Jurgen Wieben. He died last week at Camp Cody, Deming, New Mexico, after being ill for some days with pneumonia in a hospital at that camp. The body was brought home Sunday and burial took place at Hudson the first of the week.

Although the home and postoffice is given as Hudson, across the line in Black Hawk county, Mr. Wieben registered in this county for the draft, and was one of the boys called from Grundy county under the selective service act. He went to Camp Dodge from Grundy Center with the second increment.

The young man died in the service of his country and the same honor and respect is due him and his memory as if he fell on the field of battle.
