Clark Winans Sr.
Clark Winans Sr. was the first Winans to come to Crawford County. He was born December 18, 1813 in Trumbull County, Ohio. He was of German Irish Descent. He married Julia Graves who was born in 1816. Julie died August 12, 1838 at the age of 22 years, and is buried in Eckis Cemetery in Ohio. They had two children:
- i. Milton Winans, born 1834 in Trumbull Co., Ohio and died June 5, 1836 in Trumbull Co., Ohio
- 1. ii. Lucy Jane Winans
Clark Winans Sr. then married Catherine Shively on May 7, 1840 in Trumbull Co., Ohio. She was born January 31, 1816, Beaver Co., Pennsylvania. She died at Vail, Iowa, April 3, 1898, and is buried at Deloit, Iowa, next to her husband. Read her death notice.
Soon after their marriage they went to Hamilton County, Illinois and two years later to Bureau County, Illinois. August 1, 1854, Clark Winans Sr. and family and B. F. Wicks and wife left Sheffield, Illinois for Nebraska to homestead. They came by ox team and wagon to Boone, Iowa. From there they went to Panora, Iowa where they stopped to rest and met an Ambrose Richardson who suggested they try and settle in Crawford county, which had just been attached to Shelby County for Civil Government.
Winans and Wicks rode up the Boyer Valley to investigate, but returned to their families without making a decision. When they started next day and arrived at a fork in the road, Wicks, in the lead, called "Which way Winans?", Winans then yelled back, "Set a stick up straight in the road, and whichever way it falls, we will go."
It fell toward Crawford County and two days later they arrived in Dunhams' Grove and the next day, September 1, 1854 they arrived in Mason's Grove. They found ten families in and around Mason's Grove, Ben Dobson, Tom Dobson, Jesse Mason, Levi Skinner, Alonzo Hunt, Noah Johnson, George Johnson, Franklin Prentice, Calvin Horr and Ambrose Richardson.
Clark Winans Sr. and Catherine Shively had the following children:
- i. Samantha Winans - She was born about 1841, died about 1849, and is buried at Vail, Iowa

- iii. Clara Elizabeth Winans She was born January 22, 1844. She married an Levi Olney about 1905 and she died December 13, 1913, and is buried at Odebolt, Iowa

Generation No. 2
1. Lucy Jane Winans was born May 22, 1836 near Warren, Trumble County, Ohio. She died Jan. 16, 1929. Read her obituary. She married John Dobson, one of the first marriages in Crawford County, February 18, 1855, at Deloit, Iowa. John Dobson assisted in breaking the land with an ox team on the site now occupied by Deloit, Iowa. The had the following children:
- i. Merinda Dobson. She was born in Iowa in 1856. She married Jesse Mason Jr. on May 23, 1875 in Crawford County, and she died on Jan. 9, 1916, in Los Angeles, California. See a newspaper article announcing her death.
- ii. Julia Ann Dobson. She was born a twin in Iowa, February 21, 1857. She married Charles R. Wiley, April 14, 1886 in Denison, Iowa. She died Jan. 9, 1916, in Orifino, Idaho. See a newspaper article announcing her death.
- iii. Mary Jane Dobson. She was born a twin in Iowa, February 21, 1857. She married Jacob Hatfield. She died February, 1890, and is buried in Deloit, Iowa.
- iv. Clinton Metellis Dobson. He was born at Deloit, Iowa January 9, 1859 and died May 23, 1950.
- v. Franklin G. Dobson. He was born May 4, 1862, at Deloit, Iowa.
- vi. Julian Elihu Dobson. He was born a twin April 9, 1864 in Deloit, Iowa. He married Ina Rose Dickson (sister to Junius' wife) December 24, 1891, at Little Bear Ridge, Idaho. Julian died November 24, 1945, in Idaho.
- vii. Junias Elias Dobson. He was born a twin April 9, 1864 in Deloit, Iowa. He married Bertha Melissa Dickson (sister to Julian's wife) December 24, 1891, at Little Bear Bridge, Idaho. Junius died December 31, 1949, in Idaho.
- viii. Cora Florella Dobson. She was born about 1871. She married Thomas Graham Wanless November 15, 1895 in Calgary, NWT, Canada. She died September 12, 1951 in Kamloops, British Columbia Province, Canada.

- x. Edith Dobson Putbreese. She was born March 1, 1876, and died August 21, 1960. She married Gustave Albert Putbreese October 19, 1915. She married Thomas J. Watkins, July 10, 1947.

2. Henry Shively Winans. He was born April 3, 1842 near Brewster Hamilton Co., Illinois and died August 30,1902, at Vail, Iowa, and is buried at Vail, Iowa. He married Louisa Bennett in May 30, 1869. He married Flora Belle Lowery in May, 27, 1883. He married Minnie Hattery in 1891. Read his death notice. He had the following children:
- i. Clarence Edward Winans. He was born November 5, 1873, the son of Henry and Louisa Bennett.
- ii. Olive Belle Winans. She was born about 1883, the daughter of Henry and Flora Bell Lowery.
- iii. Hazel Delia Winans. She was born July 22, 1892, the daughter of Henry and Minnie Hattery. She was married to Martin John Minter. She died November 19, 1952, and is buried at Deloit, Iowa.
- iv. Henry Iley Winans. He was born August, 1896, and died June, 1955, and is buried at Deloit, Iowa.
- v. Elias Allen Winans. He was born August 15, 1899, the son of Henry and Minnie Hattery. He married Tena Galland, July 16, 1919 in Omaha, Nebraska. He and died November 11, 1949 and is buried in Deloit, Iowa.
3. Sarah A. Winans. She was born March 8, 1846, died February 20, 1866, and is buried at Deloit, Iowa. She married Solomon (Sol) Slater March 16, 1865, in Denison, Iowa. They had the following child:
- i. Henry Slater. He was born December 12, 1865, near Denison, Iowa, and died September 28, 1955.
4. George Shively Winans. He was born February 18, 1848, Bureau County, Illinois, and died May 11, 1922, buried at Deloit, Iowa.

He married Sarah Sabina McKim September 27, 1877. She was born in Chester county, Pennsylvania, March 9, 1860. She died in Deloit, Iowa, January 3, 1915. Read her obituary. They had the following children:
- i. Ray N. Winans. He was born August 6, 1878, near Deloit, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Benjamina Dawson March 11, 1900. He died June 13, 1956, at Nebraska City, Nebraska. He is buried at Wyuka Cemetery, Nebraska City, Nebraska. Read his obituary.
- ii. Mabel Fay Winans. She was born July 17, 1883. She married E. W. Pilcher of Ida Grove, Iowa, August 2, 1902. She died November 6, 1906, and is buried at buried Deloit, Iowa. Read her obituary.
- iii. Bessie Clare Winans. She was born March 1, 1886. She married Mearl O. Myers December 18, 1904, in Deloit. She died December, 1977, and is buried at Deloit, Iowa.

5. Mary Ellen Winans. She was born May 27, 1850, Bureau County, Illinois and died November 28, 1919. She married Sol Slater October 1, 1868, at Denison, Iowa, after her sister Sarah died. They had the following children:
- i. George Winans Slater. He was born June 16, 1871, and died July 1, 1963. He is buried at Denison, Iowa.
- ii. Catherine Slater. She was born 6 miles east of Denison on Sept. 22, 1872. On Jan. 4, 1893, she was married to Arthur J. Barrow. She died September 9, 1931, at Lincoln, Nebraska, and is buried at Nishnabota Cemetery, Manilla, Iowa. Read her obituary.
- iii. Grace Slater. She was born August 8, 1874. She married Elmer E. Griffin Feb. 21, 1893 at Manilla, Iowa. She died June, 1970 at Van Buren, Michigan. She is buried at Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa.
- iv. Frank Slater. He was born June 30, 1876, near Denison, Iowa. He married Olive Eames, date unknown. He married Lillian Northum Feb. 22, 1899, Denison, Iowa. He married Edna Peters Aug 9 1938 at Carroll, Iowa. He died December, 1978, and is buried at Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa.
6. Josiah Winans. He was born November 4, 1852, Bureau County, Illinois. He married Mary Ann McKim November 27, 1873, in Crawford County. She was born Aug. 22, 1855, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David McKim. She died January 23, 1928, in Deloit, Iowa. Read her obituary. He died January 23, 1893. - i. Laurence Winans. He was born August 27, 1874, near Deloit, Iowa. He married Maggie Hopper December 24, 1897. He died February 25, 1908, near Deloit, Iowa, and is buried at Denison, Iowa. Read his obituary.
- ii. Elmer Winans. He was born July 10, 1876, Deloit, Iowa. He was married February 23, 1898 to Miss Vida Albright. He died July 8, 1908, at Lemmon, South Dakota and is buried at Lemmon, South Dakota. Read his obituary.
- iii. Arthur "Lloyd" Winans. He was born September 19, 1878, Deloit, Iowa. He married Amy Blanche Childress November 5, 1899, in Deloit. He died February 25, 1956, and is buried at Cameron, Missouri. Read his obituary.
- iv. Earl Ora Winans. He was born April 12, 1881, Deloit, Iowa. He married Mary Mae Newcom March 26, 1907 in Bonesteel, South Dakota. Read her obituary. He died August 11, 1944, at Omaha, Nebraska, and is buried at Deloit, Iowa.
- v. Maurice Scott Winans. He was born, January 1, 1883, Deloit, Iowa. He married Ella Susan Streeter Oct 10, 1903 at Denison, Iowa. He married Nina Mae Streeter McKim Feb. 24, 1947 at Sac City, Iowa. He died April 20, 1971, at Denison, Iowa, and is buried at Wall Lake, Iowa.
- vi. Josie Ethel Winans. She was born, July 20, 1885. She married Harry Milton Childress March 23, 1902 at Deloit, Iowa. She died March 13, 1972, and is buried at, Deloit, Iowa.

7. Julia Lucretia Winans. She was born March 1856. She married Taylor Pearce.
The had the following children:
- i. Alice L. "Sis" Pearce . She was born June, 1874. She married Wm. H. Farley September 4, 1894, at Denison, Iowa. She died circa 1942, and is buried at Vail, Iowa.
- ii. George Clark Pearce. He was born February 27, 1878, and died November 25, 1949, Omaha, Nebraska.
- iii. Catherine Pearce. She was born June 12, 1880, and died July 31, 1887, and is buried at Vail, Iowa.
- iv. Harry Thatcher Pearce. He was born July 19,1883, and died June 22, 1938, Omaha, Nebraska.
8. Clark Winans, Jr. He was born September 12, 1859, Deloit, Iowa, and died December 18, 1942. He is buried at Lake View, Iowa. He married Mary Joslin April 24, 1883, at Vail, Iowa. They had the following children:
- i. Edna Alice Winans. She was born October 22, 1888. She married Harry Morton West September, 14, 1910. She died December 1, 1962, and is buried at Odebolt, Iowa.
- ii. Howard Winans. He was born May 28, 1900.
