Clayton county unidentified photos
Daniel Nehls Photo Album

Contributed by Kathy Schneider, Daniel Nehls gg-granddaughter

I recently inherited my great-great-grandfather Daniel Nehls photo album. Unfortunately none of photos are unidentified. About 1878 Daniel moved his family to western Iowa where they remained. I think the photos are all from Clayton County and I would like to know if anyone recognizes any of the people. Please email me if you can ID anyone; please refer to the photo number (kathyaschneider@hotmail.com)

Daniel August Christian Nehls was born August 8, 1825 in Germany. He came to the United States in 1853. He married Maria Cords in Garnavillo, August 1856. Maria was born Aug 15, 1837. Daniel farmed, and he was also a physician, but must not have widely practiced. They were blessed with 13 children, 8 of them died of diphtheria and are buried in Garnavillo cemetery.

In 1878 they sold their land in Clayton county, bought land in Crawford county, Iowa and moved there with three grown sons, Martin, August and John, and a young daughter Rosena.

Louis Nehls, a brother of Daniel, also resided in Clayton County. Louis also married a Cords. There is mention of August C. Nehls in the newspapers, but I am not sure if he is related.

I have no other information about any of the photos.

The first picture in the album, so I'm wondering if it could be Daniel August Christian Nehls

Note the pillar in the background of photos 13 & 14 appears to be identical. If so, the photos likely were taken in the same studio.

Photos 19 & 20 appear to have the same background. Possibly the parents of the young men in photo 19?
