WINNERS

BERNICE FICTOR

Bernice Fictor, the county’s best speller, is a member of the Eighth Grade, and has taken great interest in spelling, especially since she became a contestant in the county spelling contest last year, and won second place.

This year, to prove that she was the best speller, she competed in four different contests, three of which were held in the high school assembly and the other at Tipton.

We selected six pupils from each of the following grades: Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth. Then came the final contest by which we found the school’s champion speller. This contest consisted of twenty-four contestants over which Bernice won first place.

On Saturday, March 18, she went to Tipton, accompanied by a few of the faulty and school members. Here, after forty-nine rounds, Bernice won first place. The winning word was “ignoramus.”

On Friday evening, April 20, she competed in the state contest held in Des Moines. She was the sixty-first, out of one hundred and four contestants, to go down. Governor Hammill presented all of the contestants with medals as a reward for receiving first in the county contests. You may be sure that we are just as proud of the medal as Bernice is.

Supts. Mr. Davies of Lowden and Mr. Scarcliff of Calamus and the Dramatic Coach Mrs. Van Horne, also of Calamus, were the judges.

More interest was shown in declamatory work this year than in previous years, judging from the large crowd that attended.

SUB COUNTY CONTEST
FEBRUARY 15, 1928

The Sub County Contest was held at Clarence in the Legion Hall to determine who would represent this district in the County Contest to be held at Tipton, February 22.

Three schools were represented, Stanwood, Mechanicsville and Clarence. There were three contestants in the Oratorical, three in the Dramatic and two in the Humorous. Clarence won first in the Oratorical, Stanwood in the Humorous and Mechanicsville in the Dramatic.

Alberta Kemmann won second in the Dramatic and Ina Kammeyer second in the Humorous.

Miss Ruth Whitsell of West Liberty judged the contest.

COUNTY CONTEST

The final County Contest was held at Tipton, February 22, to determine the winners of the county. There were eight schools represented: Durant, Lowden, Tipton, Springdale, West Branch, Stanwood, Mechanicsville, and Clarence.

Beulah Bower who represented Clarence won first in the Oratorical division, Tipton first in the Dramatic, and Springdale first in the Humorous.

The winners were awarded silver loving cups, which were presented by Supt. R. J. Kidder, President of the County School Master’s Club.

Beulah deserves a great deal of credit for her ability in declamatory work. Her selection was on the state debarred list, therefore she could not enter the State Preliminary, which was held at Mount Vernon. Alberta Kemmann entered this contest and won first place. She was then permitted to enter the Sub District Contest which was held at Grand Mound. Here she won third place.

DRAMATIC CLUB

The Dramatic Club was organized at the beginning of the year. Those who wished to become members were given a tryout, which required them to learn and recite two stanzas of “Old Ironsides.” Of the thirty who entered the tryout seventeen were chosen. They were: Velma Bachman, Leona Bixler, Ruth Barnhart, Beulah Bower, Warren Claney, Louella Cashman, Deloris Dean, Norma Dresselhaus, Esther Hartwig, Eleanor Hansen, Norma Koch, Alberta Kemmann, Norma Stange, Douglas McCarthy, Mary Carolyn McCarthy, and Leona Shaefer.

 :
You can always tell a Senior
He’s so sweetly dressed.
You can always tell a Sophomore
By the way he swells his chest.
You can always tell a Freshman
By his timid look and such.
And you can always tell a Junior,
But you cannot tell him much.
