BOYS ATHLETICS
BASKETBALL

Back Row—Howard Britcher, Warren Claney, Leonard Shaefer, Raymond Hansen, Coach Macaulay. Front Row—Douglas McCarthy, Mearl Keseberg, Howard Claney, Lawrence Kleppe (Capt.), Harold Dewell, Daniel Mowry, Elmer Bixler

The boys of Clarence High School started the season with an inexperienced team. Three men of last year’s team returned: Captain Kleppe, Keseberg, and H. Claney; this left two guard places to be filled.

After two weeks of intensive practice Coach Macaulay took the boys to Bennett. The game, which was very close, resulted in an overtime period. Clarence was finally defeated by one point. After this game the first team was chosen as follows: Center, Kleppe; Forwards, H. Claney, Dewell and D. McCarthy; Guards, Keseberg and Mowry.

Although the season was not a successful one from the standpoint of games won, there are several other things to be considered, such as the development of the physical endowment of the body. Then, true athletics are not bone and sinew alone, but express such qualities as quickness, skill, courage, and manliness.

February third and fourth, Coach Macaulay and the team journeyed to West Branch to enter a county tournament, where the boys showed up to a good advantage, entering the semi-finals. It was in these games that “Irish” McCarthy started on the way to fame.

The high school appreciates the efforts made by these boys throughout the whole basket ball season.

BASEBALL

Back Row—Howard Britcher, Douglas McCarthy, Coach Macaulay. Front Row—Harold Dewell (Capt.), Mearl Keseberg, Howard Claney, Lawrence Kleppe, Warren Claney, Daniel Mowry, Elmer Bixler.

Looking at the baseball season as our other branch of athletics, we find it highly successful. The boys won nearly all of their games. Clarence High School boasts a well rounded team; with men as W. Claney and Keseberg for battery would make any school feel proud.

On first base we find H. Claney who always turned in a good game as do Mowry and Bixler, our other basemen. Captain Dewell at short stop can always be depended upon to play a good game. In the outfield we find McCarthy playing right field in league baseball style; Kleppe taking care of center field, with Frink, Goldsmith, Barnhart, and Britcher alternating at left field.

We have enjoyed our past two years of athletic work under the coaching of Mr. Macaulay and regret that this is the last year he is to be with us.

GIRLS ATHLETICS

Back Row—Leona Bixler, Coach Koch, Ina Kammeyer. Second Row—Hilda Kammeyer, Myrle Miller, Marjorie Curran. Third Row—Neoma Moore, Myra Moore (Capt.), Norma Koch. Front Row—Dorothy Koch, Mary C. McCarthy.

The Clarence High School girls showed exceptionally good sportsmanship by taking part in various athletics. The girls enjoyed the basket ball season more this year than ever before, due partly to the fact that they won all their games but one. They manifested good sportsmanship throughout the year, which after all, is what athletics should create for the team.

Myra Moore, a Senior, was captain of our basket ball team. The girls on the team were: Forwards, Mary Carolyn McCarthy and Myra Moore; Jumping Center, Norma Koch; Side Center, Dorothy Koch; Guards, Hilda Kammeyer and Neoma Moore.

Miss Koch had charge of all girls’ athletics. Mr. Kidder scheduled the games for us. Miss Koch tried very hard to enter us in a tournament and finally succeeded. The girls enjoyed the tournament held at Mt. Vernon very much. Our team was the first team that was ever entered in a girls’ tournament from Clarence.

In the spring baseball and tennis are the chief sports in which the girls participate. We appreciate Miss Koch’s interest and help in working with us this year.

ANNUAL BASKETBALL BANQUET

The basket ball banquet was held in the Methodist Church April fourteenth, at seven o’clock. Thirty-two guests were present including the boys’ and girls’ basket ball teams, substitutes, coaches and high school faculty.

The church parlors were beautifully decorated in the school colors, cardinal and black. A three table arrangement was used with a basket ball as the center piece.

A two course dinner was served by the mothers of the teams. The menu consisted of mashed potatoes, creamed chicken, baked beans, scalloped corn, waldorf salad, rolls, jelly, ice cream and angel food cake.

Following the dinner Mr. Macaulay presented the following boys with letters or service stripes: Captain Kleppe, M. Keseberg, D. Mowry, H. Dewell, H. Claney, C. Claney, L Schaefer, H. Britcher and D. McCarthy.

Miss Koch then presented the following girls with their letters or service stripes: Myra Moore, Neoma Moore, Dorothy Koch, Mary Carolyn McCarthy, Hilda Kammeyer, Ina Kammeyer, Leona Bixler, Marjorie Curran, Myrle Miller, and Dorothy Meier.

Extemporaneous toasts were then given by the captains of each team, Miss Beadle, and Mr. Kidder.

The remainder of the evening was spent playing games and at ten o’clock everyone departed.
