Index to the 1875 Atlas of Bremer County, Iowa
Introduction
I've compiled a simple, every-name index of the names on the plat maps in the 1875 Atlas. Be aware that the numbering system starts in the upper left corner of the map, and each section is a four-mile square area. The numbering goes right to left, so the top row would be Sec. 1 - 6. The second row then starts directly underneath Sec. 6 and begins with Sec. 7 and moves right until Sec. 12 and so on. Someone who owns land in Sec. 6 & 7 would have land on both sides of the road.
Another area to note is that with the alphabetical listings, you find a number of "Num. small claims/Initials only" - these seem to have been wooded lots that people used to cut wood in the winter. They are usually found along the Cedar River and in Jefferson Township, the location of the Big Woods. A number are also found in Frederika Township.
I listed all the names as they were spelled. The names of many people seemed to have been spelled in various ways, so be sure to look at all possible spellings of the family names you're searching for.
Please also be aware that I may have made unintentional errors in transcribing this information, so be sure to check the information with official sources, such as the courthouse in Waverly. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at any time.
I truly hope this is helpful to many people.
