Andrew Torkelson Egeland (Born 1 July 1864) versus Andrew Aadneson Egeland (Born 11 June 1865)

My research to help you shows that there were two different individuals named Andreas/Andrew Egeland both born in Høyland parish, Rogaland, Norway within a year of each other. I believe that the Andrew you believe to be your great grandfather in Eagle Grove is not him.

First of all, you said that Andrew Egeland was born in 1869 to Torkel Endreson and Martha Taletta Assersdatter on Skruss Eikeland farm in Høyland, Rogaland and immigrated in 1889. My research shows that Torkel Endreson and Martha Taletta Assersdatter had a son Enevald Torkilsen Egeland born 17 July 1869 and baptized on 15 August 1869 in Høyland who emigrated from there on 25 March 1889 to America. Torkel and Martha's son, Andreas Torkildsen was born on 1 July 1864 at Skruss Eikeland farm in Høyland. His baptism is recorded in the parish records on 14 August 1864. He emigrated on 2 April 1884 to America.

Another couple in the same parish are Aadne Pederson who was born 26 May 1825 in Brastein, Høyland, Rogaland and died 5 May 1912 in Høyland, Rogaland, Norway. He was married on 16 September 1859 at Gjestal, Rogaland to Ane Aadnesdatter who was born 23 May 1837 in Bjelland, Gjestal, Rogaland, Norway and died 27 April 1912 at Eikeland, Høyland, Rogaland, Norway. They had a son, Andrew Aadneson Egeland who was born 11 June 1865 in Høyland, Rogaland, Norway and died 16 May 1955 in Rochester, Olmstead, Minnesota; His baptism is recorded as 9 July 1865 in the Høyland, Rogaland parish. This Andrew Egeland came to LaSalle County, Illinois. He married 22 February 1894 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois to Anna Askelsdatter Egland [listed as Annie Askildsen in marriage record) who was born on 5 May 1867 in Stavanger, Norway. They are enumerated together in the 1900 census in Clinton Township, DeKalb County, Illinois. His naturalization is recorded in the LaSalle County Court on 24 September 1900. On 8 September 1914, Andrew and Anna returned to New York from a trip to Norway. They embarked from Bergen on 28 August 1914 on the Bergensfjord. He is listed as Andrew born in Høiland in 1865 and Anna in Stavanger in 1867. In the 1925 Iowa State Census, Andrew's parents are listed as Adene Egeland and Anna Bjelland which corresponds to Aadne Pederson Egeland and Ane Aadnesdatter Bjelland in the Norwegian parish and census records. Anna died in Eagle Grove on 3 September 1926 in Eagle Grove, Wright, Iowa. Both Andrew and Anna are buried together in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. On his Minnesota death certificate, his mother's maiden name is “Bjelland” which corresponds with the information above that this Andrew's mother was Ane Aadnesdatter from Bjelland farm.

A death notice in the Mason City Globe Gazette [Iowa] on May 19, 1955 reads:

Rites at Eagle Grove for Pioneer Resident

EAGLE GROVE-Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Evangelical Lutheran Church for Andy Egland, 90, who died at Rochester, Minn., Monday Mr. Egland, a retired farmer who made his home in Eagle Grove 40 years, spent the past seven years at Frost, Minn. Survivors are a brother, Edward of Leland, Ill., and one sister, Amelia Olson of Kenyon, Minn.

I further looked in the Høyland, Rogaland census and parish records for other children of Aadne Pederson and Ane Aadnesdatter and located the following:

1865 census Ur Egeland farm, Høyland parish for:
Aadne Peders. ; Ane Adnesd; their children, Gustine, Peder, Maline and Andrias.
1875 census for Ur. Egeland Farm;
In 1865 and 1875 in Skruds-Ekeland farm, the other Andreas and Enevold are enumerated

Adne Adneson born 8 February 1876 and baptized 12 March 1876
Sine Amelie Aadnesdatter born 24 August 1869 and baptized 3 October 1869 at Høyland, Rogaland.

In US records, I located:
Amelia Egeland Olson (born 20 Aug 1869 and died 22 February 1956 in Rice County, Minnesota. She was married to Swan N. Olson (30 August 1861 in Illinois – 27 May 1929 in Minnesota). Amelia and Swan are enumerated in 1900 in Paw Paw, DeKalb, Illinois, in 1910 in Iowa and in 1920 in Minnesota.

And Edward (Adne) Egeland born 8 February 1876 and died December 1968 in Leland, LaSalle, Illinois

Anyway, from all of this, I don't believe that the Andrew Egeland in Eagle Grove is your ancestor.

This is who I think he may be:

Andreas Torkildsen Egeland was born on 1 July 1864 at Skruss Eikeland farm in Høyland. His baptism is recorded in the parish records on 14 August 1864. I located his emigration records for 2 April 1884 (his date of birth is recorded in this record as 1 July 1864.

He may be enumerated as a married man, Andrew Egeland, born July 1864 in Norway and living in Denver, Colorado, naturalized and working as a mine laborer in the 1900 Colorado Census.

I further find who I think may be your ancestor dying from typhoid fever on 5 August 1906 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Utah Death Certificate #858 (which I can email you if you like) says that Andrew Egeland, age 42, born Norway in 1864 with no parents listed; laborer, died at Holy Cross Hospital, Salt Lake on August 5, 1906 after an illness since June 23, 1906 (1 month and 12 days); He is buried at the Salt Lake City Cemetery as Andrew Egland on August 8, 1906 in plot T 1, 79, 3W.

What do you think? Are there two different Andrew Egeland/Egland's? Are you open to the possibility that your great grandfather went to Colorado and Utah?
