Obituary of Mrs. Maude Hummel

Maude M., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Wright was born on June 26, 1876, at Elliott, Iowa, and passed to her reward on May 23, 1948 from no apparent illness at her home in Klemme, Iowa.

Maude M. Wright was united in marriage on May 15, 1898 to LeRoy S. Hummel at Red Oak, Iowa, by the Rev. E. W. Brickert, pastor of the First Church of Christ. To this union were born three children, namely: Gladys Juanita, who died in infancy; Dwight Russell and Donavan Hugh. Mr. Hummel passed away in January, 1912, and the mother was left alone with two sons. They came to the Hummel farm just west of Klemme, Iowa, in 1920, who together operated the farm. The hardships were many, but mother never wavered in her determination to make things go. She was a hard worker and she was deeply devoted to her sons.

She was a life long member of the Church of Christ, and held her membership at Elliott, Iowa. This verse found in her Bible shows her appreciation of her church:

A Sabbath well spent
Brings a week of content;
And a health of joys of tomorrow.
But a Sabbath profaned
Whatever be gained,
Is a certain forerunner of sorrow.

It was said at the funeral of her husband: "Mr. and Mrs. Hummel loved their home passionately, and he and his good wife knew how to make others happy and enjoy themselves when in their home."

Mrs. Hummel did her own home work and refused assistance in the things she could do alone. She mowed her own lawn and cared for her garden which was weedless, as she kept both immaculately clean.

Her motto seemed to be:
I am only one, but I am one;
I cannot do everything
But I can do something.
What I can do I ought to do
And by the grace of God I will do.

Surviving her going are her two sons: Dwight Russell of Klemme, and Donavan Hugh of Garner RFD; one brother, Wayne Wright of near Kansas City, Kansas; four sisters: Mrs. Gus Spellerberg of Garden Grove, Iowa; Mrs. Fannie Saunders of Arcadia, California; Mrs. John Sweitzer, and Mrs. Eunice Brown of Omaha, Nebraska. Also seven grandchildren.
