September 20, 1923 - October 6, 2011

Elsie Berhow, 88, of Kanawha, Iowa passed away Thursday, October 6, 2011, at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha. Funeral services for Elsie Berhow will be held on Monday, October 10, 2011, at 10:30 am at the Kanawha Lutheran Church, 124 West 4th Street, in Kanawha with Pastor Charlotte White officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2011, from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Ewing Funeral Home, 118 East 2nd Street, in Kanawha and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Elsie Lillian, the daughter of Erick and Annie (Eenhuis) Olthoff, was born September 20, 1923, near Kanawha. She grew up in the Kanawha area where she also attended country schools. She was united in marriage with Galen Berhow on April 29, 1943, and they continued to live in Kanawha. Elsie was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and was an active member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church, General Aid, and the Church Circle. She was also a member and took an active role in the American Legion Auxiliary. Elsie worked as a cook at the Kanawha Community School for 20 years. In her earlier years, she loved playing softball, camping, and dancing. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Elsie is survived by two sons: Eugene "Hoot" (Rhonda) Berhow of Britt, and Wayne (Rosalyn) Berhow of Kanawha; five grandchildren: David (Coleen) Berhow, Kelly Berhow, Dena (Mark) Hejlik, Jesse (Jaclyn) Berhow, and James Berhow; 11 great-grandchildren: Brooklyn, Chase, Bradin, Brock, Gunner, Shelby, Cody, Taylor, Hannah, Emma, and Rebecca; and sister Fannie Zeigler of Mason City. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Galen in March 1984; son Dean in July 1974; five brothers: Erick, John, Fred, Raymond and infant brother Erick; three sisters: Grace, Henrietta,and Annie; and sister-in-law Betty Jones.
