MESERVEY, IA - Kenneth Alen Lerdal, 79, formerly of Meservey, died Sept. 12, 2010. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 18, at First United Methodist Church in Thornton with Pastor Rose Calderon-Khan presiding. Interment with military honors will be at Amsterdam Cemetery, Goodell.

Kenneth Alan Lerdal was born Feb. 22, 1931, at Eagle Grove, the son of Lloyd and Ruby (Knutson) Lerdal. He graduated from Belmond High School and enlisted in the Army where he served in Greenland from Nov. 16, 1950, until Sept. 15, 1953. Ken worked for his dad at the Standard Filling Station and then the Spahn & Rose lumber yard. He later started his own business, "Lerdal Construction." His three sons worked along with 15 other employees. He also managed a tavern in Belmond for two years and then a restaurant/tavern in Thornton, which he had for 20 years. On Oct. 30, 1997, Ken and Marlene got married and moved to Sunwest Mobile Park in Harlington, Texas.

Ken is survived by his wife Marlene, five children: Terry (Deb) Lerdal, Roger Lerdal, Janet Nellist, Judy Lerdal and Mike Lerdal. He is also survived by three stepchildren: Verlinda (Randy) Ennen, Bobbie (Bob) Carpenter and Dan (Deborah) Wagner. He is also survived by two sisters: Beverly Lande and Jan (Glenn) Meints; two brothers: Bud (Carol) Lerdal and Bob Lerdal; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. Ken loved to play solitaire, read books and play cards. Ken is preceded in death by his parents, daughter: Linda, brother Tom who died in the service, two infant brothers and his first wife: Shirley, who passed away in 1991. Ken was a member of American Legion Post No. 439 of La Feria, Texas, where he served as finance officer and a member of First United Methodist Church of La Feria. Retz Funeral Home.
