BELMOND, IA - Funeral services for Betty Marie Barkema, 79, of Belmond, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Goodell, with Pastor Curtis DeVance officiating. Interment will be in Amsterdam Cemetery in Goodell. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Betty Marie (Burgess) Barkema, the daughter of Thomas and Mabel (Smith) Burgess, was born Feb. 24, 1921, at the family home in Goodell. She was united in marriage to Hauko Barkema on Aug. 20, 1940, at the Immanuel Reformed Church, east of Belmond. To this union two sons were born, Randall and Russell. They farmed together for 37 years east of Belmond. On March 31, 1977, they retired to a new home in Clear Lake. After Hauko died in 1987, Betty continued to live in Clear Lake until September of 1995, when she moved to Belmond. She became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in April of 1999 and died there on Thursday (April 13, 2000).

Those left to cherish her memories are her sons, Randall and his wife, Alta, of Charles City and Russell Barkema and his wife, Kay, of Belmond; grandchildren, Todd Barkema and his wife, Renee, of Monticello, Kevin Barkema and his wife, Gayle, of Conrad, and Justin Barkema, of Ankeny; stepgrandchildren, Whitney and Justin; great-grandchildren, Adam, Rachel, Leah, Abby and Brad; a brother, Joe Burgess and his wife, Aileen, of Garner. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hauko; brother, Richard; and two sisters, Ina Mae Halfpop and Helma Proper. Tenold Funreal Home.
